Need advice from anyone who got married in a court house.

Courtney, on May 29, 2019 at 11:56 AM Posted in Mississippi Planning 0 7
So I’m getting very frustrated with the state of MS, I have called all our surrounding counties and it seems no one performs marriage ceremonies outside of a church. I have called local justice courts (which on county websites says the judges perform ceremonies) only to be no they don’t and I need to contact circuit court for license......I do not need a license I need someone to sign and make the license legal. Has anyone had this problem? I feel like I’m just going on cirlces. Am I not asking the correct questions? Am I not calling the correct court systems? Please help!

Hey Courtney, sounds like you've had a really frustrating time! Maybe we can help you search. Are you hoping to get married at the courthouse, or have you chosen a venue and you're looking for a celebrant to officiate it for you?

First I'd choose your venue, then I'd book an officiant who can work there, and then you'll need to apply for a license in the county where you'll be getting married. Do you have a venue selected and booked yet?

Yes we are getting married at a courthouse that’s the plan. We already have the license that’s why it’s been frustrating. The judges and supervisors in our county and several surrounding counties will not perform crememonies and the counties I have called after looking on county websites saying their judges do perform them tell me no and I need to contact circuit clerk for a license, I explain I already have license I just need someone to make it official. They still refer me to circuit clerk. Originally we planned an out of state ceremony where a friend of mine who is ordained was going to marry us but the state doesn’t recgonize ULC ordainments.

Are you close enough to the courthouse to drop down and speak to someone in person?

There is a little info here in Marriage Laws By State. I did just have a quick Google and on https://marriagelicense.io/us/mississippi it says "circuit court clerks do not solemnize marriages" so that might be why you're running into some trouble.

I did see two lovely outdoor, nonreligious weddings in the WeddingWire Real Weddings section -

    Beth and Manuel's Wedding

    Rebecca and Matthew's Wedding

Right, I know circuit clerks don’t. It’s the justice courts and supervisors who can but I asked and none of them will agree to do it.

Would you consider hiring a professional officiant outside of the court system? That might give you a wider pool of options, as well as more flexibility on date and location. We have some listed in the Vendor tab - Officiants in Mississippi

I’m not sure if you’re married yet, but Hinds county perform ceremonies at the court house for a fee. You have to have your license and make an appointment
