Need Advice... please... How do you cut satin straight???

Midwest May, on August 21, 2015 at 12:53 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 6

We are cutting the 108" satin sashes into sections 36" long, adding a circle rhinestone slider brooch and sewing the ends together to create this look in satin instead of stretch polyester.

I'm laying the satin runners out flat on a table but when I try to cut them with scissors they come out really jagged. Am I using the wrong tool? Do I need to do something to keep the ends taught while I cut or what the heck am I doing wrong?

Two things I can think of that may help:

1-- use REALLY REALLY good/sharp fabric scissors-- any old scissors won't really do. I like these: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B003YKZ59Y?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01

2-- pin the fabric to tissue paper-- this will help keep it from slipping around so much.

A rotary cutter would be best/ easiest. At the least, use sharp fabric scissors. Don't use regular scissors.

I second the rotary cutter, with a board (you can buy a set). Also a fabric tape measure and a fabric marker (the ink fades away).

FYI rotary cutters are sharp. Go figure... Pay attention to where your other hand is. If you hit your finger there will be lots of blood. But since it's sharp no scar. lol

Rotary cutter and a cutting guide that you can lay on top of the fabric near where you will cut to hold it down and to keep a straight line. Sharp fabric scissors are good too, but the rotary cutter is best for this.
