On 6/8, we received an email from Macy's that an item was purchased from our registry but it was on back-order and would ship on 7/23. Since the person who purchased the gift was notified of this as well, we decided to wait until it arrived to send a thank you so we can let them know it was safely received.
This morning, I got an email that there is another delay, and the new ship date was listed as "12/31/9999." So I called Macy's and asked them for the actual date and they said they use that date when they don't actually know the ship date. Apparently there is a vendor delay and they can't give any kind of estimated timeline for this, and that we have two options - just continue waiting and see when it arrives, or cancel the item and get the credit in a gift card. She also confirmed that the person who bought us the gift would be notified with the same email.
Ideally, we don't want to cancel the order as we really love that item and have no problem waiting, but I'm just concerned that's not actually going to arrive and don't want it to fall off the radar completely and have this person waste their money on a gift that never actually existed.
So, I have two questions:
Should we reach out and send a thank you now even though we don't know when it will get here? She bought it over a month ago and I feel weird not sending any kind of thank you soon. They live across the country so they were definitely shipping it to us, not trying to bring it a shower/to the wedding.
My second question is, should we cancel it? We selected two matching sets of wine glasses on the registry, one tall and one short. She bought the tall set and the short set is still on there. Do we remove both and use the credit to buy a different set of glasses? Thoughts?
