Need Help: Hair and Makeup Timeline/thoughts

Madison, on April 25, 2023 at 11:44 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 7

Hi, all! I know that my photographer should be able to help with the timeline, as well as my makeup and hair artists. I just wanted to get some outside thoughts and opinions because it's stressing me out! lol. So, there are 7 of us getting hair and makeup done (me, 4 bridesmaids, MOB, and MOG) — we are getting our hair done at a salon about 13 min away from the venue, and the salon is like 2 min away from the hotel we are staying at the night before.

I am having someone else doing makeup that is not part of the salon, so it's making things difficult for me to figure out scheduling since it is not all in the same place. I originally wanted to have makeup done at the venue, but the bridal cabin is very small, so I was thinking that maybe the hotel would be better? It's not out of the way, as it's actually heading in the direction of the venue.

I know at the salon for hair, there will be multiple stylists working and so several of us can be getting ready at one time. Do you think it would work that as people are done with their hair, that they can go over to the close by hotel to get makeup done? Or do you think that having them go to the venue would be better? Again, the cabin is quite small, but if people are going in small waves, not everyone would be there at once is my thinking.

My ceremony will start at 3:30 pm, and I think that the salon was recommending starting around 8:30/9am to have everyone done by 1pm (that's just the rough time that they gave me so far), they also mentioned that everyone will show up at the same time. The makeup artist was saying that it would probably take 45 min or so per person. I also do not necessarily want to get dressed at the hotel.

I just wanted some outside thoughts to calm the anxiety that I am feeling with all of this. I had no idea that this part of it all would make me feel so stressed out, hahaha. Thank you in advance!

I would definitely depend on your vendors to set the timeline instead of figuring it out yourself. Your hair salon will be able to tell you how many people they can do at once. It will also depend whether you’re doing getting ready pics, detail shots, and/or a first look and, if so, what time your photographer suggests starting those. I would also build in an extra cushion for transportation. Three different locations that you need to get to is kind of a lot. That’s good that the salon is so close to your hotel and ceremony, but is that walking or driving distance? If it’s driving, are you taking an Uber (in which case you’ll need to factor in time for one to come)? Even if you have a hired shuttle, you still want a cushion for them to not be able to find parking, get stuck on traffic, etc. So we can give you our timelines that apply to our own weddings, but at the end of the day, it’s going to be so dependent on your specific factors.

Thank you for your feedback! This definitely gives me some other things to think about that I originally hadn't, and some other things that I can bring up to my photographer.

I am very much one who wants to take control, so I think I was very much having a panic moment.

I would also leave it up to your vendors that know what they’re doing. Do you have a coordinator at all? Our day of coordinator did a FaceTime call with us and our photographer to nail down the timeline that would work for our day and she handled everything else. I never even figured out what time hair/makeup was coming. She talked to them and figured it out based on all the info for the day

I don’t have a day of coordinator. I did schedule a call with my photographer, and he said he’ll walk me through a timeline to figure it all out.

I’m such a type A person lol, I felt like I needed to be in control of everything, but in reality I don’t, so I think I was getting myself worked up over stuff that other people are going to help set the timeline for.

Totally feel you. I had my hands on everything and did it myself lol. But once I decided to let other people got involved like having a coordinator my stress was so much better. Like I didn't have to think about a single thing on my wedding day. She set up and talked to the vendors and did everything. But since you don't have that help I would just rely on the vendors you do have. They have an idea of what they are doing. We all have overwhelming moments through this whole process!

You need to consult your vendors (photographer and hair/makeup team) and ask for their professional opinion because they make timelines for a living as part of their job description. The beauty team needs to know when you are available to start based on when you’re getting ready spot opens to use and when your ceremony or pre ceremony photos start. That way they know how many assistants to bring along based on the number of people they will be working on. Just like your photographer need to know if you want them to film you getting ready or go straight to pre ceremony pictures.

A day of coordinator who is not you or a guest is essential for making sure the day runs smoothly behind the scenes. You will be too busy and in a bubble to know that anything has gone wrong. Your family and friends don’t have your vendors and suitable alternates on speed dial, nor do they know what your vision is or have coordination experience usually, unless they are professionals. And it takes away from them being able to enjoy themselves as guests when they do work. Some venues require a day of coordinator to be hired, because the venue coordinator doesn’t work for you or your best interests. Thumbtack.com and Eventective.com are good places to look for one.
