Need help with a 2 hour open bar saying

Jessica, on June 1, 2020 at 7:21 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7

Hi everyone!

My wedding is in 56 days, and I'm trying to figure out how to tell everyone that it's an open bar for 2 hours, then goes into a cash bar after that. Does anyone have any cute, clever, funny, etc, sayings that might work??

Thanks!

What you are planning is not the norm and has the potential to be confusing to guests. So, I would just be really clear with what they should expect. If you try to be cute or funny or clever, they may just be more confused. Something like: Hosted bar from 7-9; cash bar after 9.

Don't make jokes about needing to bring cash, it will only confuse people.

Put it on your website and your reception information, and you should also make signs.

I agree with PPs - this isn't the norm and can be confusing for guests, so you'll want to be very clear. Clear and understood is better than witty and confusing. Also, when planning your timeline for the reception, I would make sure you don't plan anything around the time it switches to a cash bar because a lot of people will be in line to get drinks before it switches.

Not sure how big your wedding is, but a 2 hour open bar is not very long and as pp mentioned not common. It's better to be honest from the start, and let your guests know that they will likely have to pay for their drinks.

I agree with Maggie. Don't be clever or cute. Just be honest and tell them you are only paying for 2 hours, provide the times, and state cash bar from then on.

I would consider that this will encourage some guests to binge drink during those 2 hours and could get messy.

I have been to a ton of weddings through the years. Some very high end and some absolutely not.

Some where open bar, some were not, one was a dry one. I had a ball at everyone of them and never judged what someone gave or didn't give to me.

Not once was I 'warned' that the bar was open or cash.

I have never heard of this except on this site and I know people have very strong opinions on it. But I actually think it sounds tacky to put it on the invite and think you could have the DJ/band announce when open bar will be closing. Remember cash bar actually takes plastic.

I would simply put on info card the first 2 hours of open bar are on us. Full cash Bar for the remainder of the wedding.

or you could just cover cocktail hours and then cut off.
