Need Help with Makeup for Acne prone Skin and Scarring

SRD, on August 9, 2018 at 9:37 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 15
Since I have been planning for the wedding, I finally made the decision to start doing my own makeup. I will be hiring a professional for my engagement pictures and wedding, but I wanted to try to do like a everyday makeup myself that looks more natural. I was hoping to do my own makeup by the time my sister and dad throw the engagement party so I tried my best to research.

I am confused on the best makeup to try out because I have acne( mild pimple breakout here and there and hormonal acne) oh and also acne scarring like hyperpigmentation kind. I have combination skin if this helps. From researching I believe I have to get a primer, color correcter for the scars, concealer, foundation, and a setting spray? With having to get all of that I have wondered if it would just be better to get a airbrush thing instead. I wanted to go the simple route since this is my first time with makeup and go for a natural look but there are so many and I am not sure which is the best for acne prone skin. Any suggestions or advice is very appreciated.

Do you have an Ulta store near you? The have reps for several of the top make-up lines. They work with customers on their make-up. They may be able to assist you with your every day makeup and possibly your day of events.

I have acne prone skin too, and every concealer i used always made me break out more... I use Mary Kay products now... their acne face wash is the only thing that has helped my skin (and I even tried multiple prescription meds that didn’t work before that). I use their “liquid to powder” foundation for oily skin, and then I wear their concealer on top of that. This is the only brand that hasn’t worsened my breakouts, and it covers my blemishes very well without feeling “heavy.”

Whatever you do, always make sure to wash your face before AND after taking your makeup off. And make sure that any product you get (whether it’s face wash, moisturizer, concealer, etc) is OIL FREE or it will definitely worsen your breakouts.

    Good luck!

I found out there is a Ulta store near me so I will go there. My biggest reason for never really trying makeup was the fear it would break me out even worse. But at the same time I hated going around with acne scarring all over my face. I have too tried meds, over the counter and more but has not overall helped. Thank you for the tips. I will make sure to ask about getting stuff with no oils🤗

I totally get that, so many different makeups have made me break out even worse. If you talk to someone at Ulta or anyone professional they should be able to get you products that are specifically non-pore-clogging. But definitely talk to someone professional who’s used to dealing with these issues rather than just trying to figure it out yourself

I would avoid airbrush. I have acne prone, scarred skin and all it did was cling to my imperfections and dry out quickly. I use cerave moisturizer every morning, then a primer with blue tones so my red doesn't come through as much. I haven't tried them, but I've heard matte foundations help with oily skin. I would use a lighter powder after liquid foundation too!

Thank you for the advice! I think my mind set is if I have to apply all those things: primer, concealer, foundation, setting powder and then setting spray my acne is going to freak out and breakout. Then I know me I will regret trying makeup. But if I do airbrush maybe it won’t break out as much because I am putting less products on there. I honestly don’t know but again thank you for the advice because that does lead me in a better direction.

Hey SRD! I would recommend Estee Lauder's Double Wear foundation! It offers great, buildable coverage and works well on acne-prone sensitive skin! You should also try visiting your local Sephora to try Makeup Forever's powder to pair with it, as Makeup Forever also has a great range of products for sensitive, acne-prone skin!

Hi there! I actually am a makeup artist and in working on bridal parties, I've used a lot of products! I've had the dinair airbrush kit and I've gotta say, I'm not crazy about it. After trying to make it work I ended up retiring it. I just really dont like the way the makeup sits with it. If you have redness, a green based primer would be best. Smashbox has a good one, but Elfs is good too and way cheaper. This will also help with any texture. For foundation, a good full coverage is the kat von d lock it liquid foundation. A little goes a long way. Its definitely a thicker consistency, though, so bare that in mind. If it's a little too thick you could mix it with a tinted moisturizer. I've been loving the l'oreal lumi glotion. This would also bring a more natural look to the kat von d, as that foundation is pretty matte. And as far as setting spray, I cant say enough about Skindanavia bridal setting spray. It works really well, and brings back a skin finish to the makeup. I love that it doesnt look like a bunch of powders are piled up after I use this.

Thank you for the advice. The closest Sephora to me is far out so I will just have to see when I can make it out there. Ulta is down the street from me. Will check out those brands too. Thanks!

Thank you very much for your professional advice and brand suggestions. You addressed some issues I was wondering especially the looking like everything is piled up on my face. I want to get as close as I can to making myself look like I don’t have makeup on so again thanks for the advice. I am also very convinced after you saying as well that airbrush is not as great too.
