What kind of inspiration are you looking for specifically? Flavors or pictures or something else?

All of the flavors we tasted were so delicious, we decided to do 3 cakes in 3 different flavors: funfetti, chocolate with salted caramel, and lemon with raspberry jam

Have you done a GoogleMaps search of your area to see what local businesses offer? It would be a disappointment if you fell in love with a flavor that isn’t offered locally where you are.

We are in a major city/high cost of living area and I was surprised how limited the selection is for a standard tiered cake. If we wanted cupcakes (too messy to eat without a fork which is never offered) the flavor/filling choices are endless. For a standard tiered cake, they are limited to chocolate, vanilla and carrot. For a minimal few dollars extra, we were able to find a bakery willing to travel who offers a wider selection and tastier cakes.
We would love to have chocolate mousse with raspberry jam and a couple other flavors but unless we make it at home (violation of health code laws) no one locally offers those because there is no demand. What we did narrow them down to at the tasting were red velvet, mocha, cinnamon (similar to Sprinkles which is out of this world) and a couple others before we make final selections.

Ask them what the delivery charge is. Some bakeries such as grocery stores including Costco have delicious cakes but it’s your job to pick them up, transport and assemble.
What are their icing options? Do they do non dairy whipped cream that can be left out without needing refrigeration or do they offer buttercream or cream cheese? Do you really want to pay extra for fondant that hardly anyone will eat? Most cakes online are actually buttercream to get the smooth look.
Make sure you are able to get a tasting before you book them. Even with an all inclusive venue. Don’t go in blindly and don’t rely on someone else’s reviews. What they think is tasty could be dry and bland to you and vice versa.
Find out what the charges are for cutting slices at the reception and who does it. Can an experienced aunt cut it for you or does the venue require a waiter with no experience?

Our cake was favorite decoration, haha! We had a lavender and sage themed wedding so it complimented perfectly. Though our caterer didn’t make the cake, they did serve it at no extr charge. Something to ask about! What they (and we) loved was that it was a pedestal cake. This made it very easy to separate and cut. At the end of the night, it was easy to store our top tier and the leftovers. The baker said she preferred them because it gave extra space to decorate (to cover up the pedestals) but it was also much easier for her to transport long distances.

Also, make sure to save your top tier for the wedding night snack or serve at the reception. Do not freeze it, and many couples will say that it is inedible after 6 months to a year, largely because the ingredients are not intended to be frozen.

Many bakeries will offer a free or discounted anniversary replica.
