Need opinions/knowledge of dress alterations- help with my dress!

alietta, on July 3, 2015 at 9:51 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

So I bought this dress from BHDLN. I'm very happy with it, especially the price, but I have to add to it in some way. I don't want strapless so I am debating what kind of straps to add. Other ideas I am playing with are bridal belt, chunky sparkly necklace (If you have opinions on these, or the straps, I welcome them...)

And my main question- do you think a slit would work with this style of skirt? Have any experience adding a slit to a dress like this? I love how slits look, but don't want to ruin the dress if it doesn't work with this style. Thanks for any help!

Beautiful dress. I don't think a slit would be a good idea with it and with the multiple layers to the skirt could be difficult. As for straps I'm attaching a picture I got from a pinterest search. If the belt shown in your picture doesn't come with the dress you should certainly add one. Good luck.

Ooh, pretty! No clue about the slit, but my inclination would be that it wouldn't really work with this dress, as there are surely many layers to it.

I LOVE tulle straps that taper at the shoulder. Like how they are on this one (only not sparkly)

This is not the dress I ended up getting but I didn't want strapless so I took a silk bridal belt and added it to see what it would look like. If you look in the mirror the straps criss-cross and I really loved that. You could do a tulle overlay maybe have it sewn in under the bust and come up over the shoulders! I also put a clip in to make it more of a sweetheart. It's such a pretty and romantic dress!

No slit. The layers and the way the skirt is made would likely hide the slit anyways.

Oooh I had my eye on this dress too! My dress in also from BHLDN Smiley smile

Maybe some blingy straps? or a Iacy cap sleeve? I say a pretty sash and a nice necklace would do the trick. And check out etsy for sashes because BHLDNS are crazzzyy expensive. I got mine off etsy for like $25

Thanks guys, and that's one thing I was worried about- the layers hiding the slit. Although on the other hand I thought maybe a "hidden" slit would work and it would be a nice little surprise when I'm walking or dancing...

Ok Alexis- that's a good idea, I even thought of making one because half of the BHDLN belts are more than the dress cost.

I am adding cap sleeves to mine and when I bought the dress they ordered an extra yard of the material. Not sure if that's something you can do, but just an idea. I would say no on the slit as well but yes to the belt.

I don't have a picture to post, but Pinterest off the shoulder wedding dresses and a ton will come up. In fact, I used the pictures on Pinterest as my inspiration, and will be going for my 1st fitting to "discuss" adding sleeves onto my strapless wedding gown. I ordered a yard of the fabric for $40.00 from the company (Casablanca) so it will match my dress as best as possible. It is the same fabric as my dress. So, if you add anything to it, make sure the fabric is the same material as the dress or there could be mismatch of color, even slightly throws it off for me. My dress is organza so my off the shoulder sleeves are also organza. With your dress I can envision more of a spaghetti strap added perhaps, or even a cap sleeve. And they sew those suckers on like its nothing. They tell me they can even put a button so you can have the versatility of having it on or off during your wedding. They come off quite easily if you want to go strapless, then change your mind and add the sleeves on mid reception ... if that's your thing. I would not add a slit to that dress.

You can add beaded straps. Lots of fabric stores sell this by the yard. You can also add a sash at each end to make a belt and it would match your straps.

If you did a slit I think just the lining so it peeks through the illusion part of the skirt.

Beautiful dress! I am also looking for sleeves so I spoke to a tailor about my options. It seems like many dresses should be easy to add a cap or regular sleeve to. I think yours should fall into that category. An illusion sleeve would look nice, I think?

    or the photo below-

Then of course you can buy a bolero/cape/jacket (I don't know if there is a difference between these 3 things?).

I don't think a slit would work well, in my opinion.

To me, the dress looks rather Grecian -- what about adding 1 strap over the shoulder?

These are all great ideas guys, thanks for sharing. I am so confused about what I want to do- you all have thought of great ideas and I don't know which direction to go!

At first I loved the look of spaghetti straps, and the idea of a statement necklace, but oddly I don't like how those two look together. Then I had short phase where I loved the look of a sleek gold necklace, and my simple dress but realized gold and white and my pale skin would probably not work as well as I would like, especially in pictures. I also love the look of beaded straps, but I tried on a dress with them and my skin had a reaction and turned red where they were...so I don't know ...sigh...I will continue to mull over all the possibilities...

I think with a belt and a statement necklace it will give the dress a little something extra without overdoing it. I don't think a slit would look bridal, but it's your dress, so do what makes you happy.

I'm a huge fan of embellished blingy straps, but those tulle overlay straps the first couple posters put up would go perfectly with your dress! Which is beautiful by the way. I'm another from team BHLDN!
