Need some advice

Amy, on August 11, 2021 at 12:28 PM Posted in Family and Relationships 0 11

Just a quick backstory.

I'm from London and my partner is from Greece. We were in a long distance replationship and he decided to move in London with me for a year. After a long discussion we've decided to move to Cyprus last month. My brothers wedding is at the end of August and I'm currently not finacially stable to attend the wedding as I had just moved. I am in the process of approving my work visa and won't be finalised until 3rd week of August. So right now - I have no income; just my savings which is barely enough for the trip to the wedding.

I know that my family will insist on helping out with the costs of flights+accommodations - however, I don't want this from them. I would feel awful.

Would it be bad not being able to attend the wedding?

It would not be wrong or bad of you if you can't attend the wedding. I'm sure if you explain the situation to your brother he would completely understand. I'm sure they can facetime you or live stream the wedding so you can enjoy from afar. I know you're probably sad you can't go, but don't feel bad or guilty about it. It's out of your control. Smiley heart

I know how this is because my sister is traveling internationally for my wedding. There's almost always a solution to these kinds of situations 🙂 Is your partner invited too? He should be splitting the costs with you. And I would accept your family's help. If they offer to pay for your accommodations, then it's clearly worth it to them.

Hi ! I understand, you have your pride and all... but think about your brother, I'm sure he would want you there ! And do accept your family's help - it can be just a loan maybe ??

I can't imagine not attending my sibling's wedding so if I didn't have the money and my family offered to cover it then I would gladly accept their help. Are you close to your bother and family? I would be concerned not attending would cause a major rift in your relationship with them.

I would do absolutely everything in my power to attend this once in a lifetime event.

You're right. It is a once in a lifetime event. The thing is I don't want to come back to Cyprus with no money at all. I'm just about surviving with my savings at the moment.

Yes. I'm quite close with my brother and family. This is also my concern if I was not attending to the wedding. Honestly, if I was stable financially I will not hesitate to go but I'm worried I will come back with absolutely nothing.

Good point. He would be disappointed if I wasn't there. I'm quite disappointed in myself to be honest..

Thanks. If my family aren't able to offer help with costs facetime/stream is also an option. Although I know it won't be the same.

Why don’t you want your family to help you with the finances? They obviously want you there. I hope you can attend. It is such an important day in your brother’s life
