Need to vent...horrible wedding hair trial!

tinyred15, on February 18, 2017 at 11:17 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 26

Hey all! So I am having a destination wedding in Belize in a month. Today I went to my normal hair stylist to see how an updo I selected would look with my wedding dress (she won't be doing my hair on my wedding day). I trust her since she does my hair every 8 weeks and she does a great job. Apparently updos aren't her thing or I look really bad with this updo. I was so disappointed I just paid and left. Now I'm at home, looking at alternative hairstyles since this looked so horrendous. I have a dress fitting today and I already yanked out the hairstyle since I was so embarrassed.

Attached is the photo I brought in for my stylist.

And this is what I looked like after being styled.

Second photo. Ignore the awkward look on my face.

She has the braid too tight. Honestly you might need extensions for this?

I'm sorry you had a bad experience, I'm just curious if she's not doing your hair why the trial?

I wanted to see how it would look with my dress since this afternoon I have a dress fitting. Plus, since she's been doing my hair for years I thought she would have done a great job! She took a whole bunch of photos for how to do it for my stylist in Belize. Which I clearly will now not be using...

I dont like it either... it doesnt look like the photo at all really:/ hopefully the stylist in belize will be able to accomplish the look you want. Some hairdressers are not good stylist!

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience.

I've had my hairdresser for over eight years and I'm not using her. I've never seen her do updos, EVER. I hired someone who specifically does bridal hairstyles. Just like with an MUA, bridal hair and makeup is an entirely different ballgame.

Do you have the time or funds to get a trial done with a bridal hairstylist?

I used a similar inspiration picture for prom (lol) and my hair ended up exactly like yours! I hated it. The braid is definitely too tight. If you still decide on this hairstyle I would just have them not braid it so right. And extensions might help too.

@Future Mrs.Nunley - I hope so! I guess I'm also super disappointed in my stylist since I obviously trust her.

@Nikki M - I think I might scrap the updo idea altogether at this point. If my stylist who I've been going to for years can't do it I'm not sure I trust someone unfamiliar with my hair to do it.

Yeah braids definitely aren't her thing, that braid is way too tight. I do think you would need extensions to achieve the fullness of that inspo pic though- I feel like 99% of inspo pics are done using extensions.

I definitely think she pulled everything too tight, it's not soft enough. I know some mentioned extensions and I second that. Sorry you're unhappy. You look beautiful, just not like that photo.

@GymRat - I wish I thought like you did before going into this! It probably would have gone a lot better. Honestly, at this point I'm just going to have to wait and see how my hair goes at the wedding. I spent $70 on this today and can't afford to spend that much again :/

What specifically did you not like about how the style turned out?

I agree with Nikki, you may need to get clip-in extensions in order to get the fullness/looseness in the braid like the inspo photo. Your regular hair may just not have the body by itself to get that look. Like Gymrat said, I would try and find someone who specializes in wedding hair and updo's because they will probably have better success at recreating that look.

@AbbyK - Everything looked so tight and sleek, which is not what the photo I brought in looks like. I do not look great with my hair flat on my head and I feel like that is what it turned into.

OP...If you decide to give it a try, I got my extensions from Sally Beauty. (I'm wearing them in my profile photo). 9 PC set, 100% human hair and I got them for under $100 on a really good sale. They have sales pretty often!

I am agreeing with everyone else here saying that the hair is too tight. Maybe teasing would help with fullness and a less sleek look?

The braid needs to pulled to a loose braid & a couple extensions might give the style a fuller look. I'm not using my hairstylist for my wedding hair. She's great but she doesn't really do wedding updos.

It's your stylist not the style!! However, send both the inspiration and recreated photo to the stylist doing for the wedding and detail what you love about the inspiration and what you don't like about the re-creation so she knows exactly what your looking for. Also, you may benefit from hair extensions to give your hair more volume or there will be a lot of curling and teasing first to give your hair the necessary height and volume.

    Best of luck!!!

Thanks, everyone! I may ask my wedding planner to set up at least a phone call with my hair stylist in Belize and see what she thinks. And I'll look into some extensions!

It's your stylist not your hair. I had this hairstyle done for a wedding I was recently in and my hair is a little passed my shoulders. She curled all my hair first and teased it give it more volume on the top. When she did the braids they were tight but she used a pick to loosen them. Then she added loose curls on the sides. I absolutely loved how it turned out. I wish I had a close up picture to show you!
