Nerdy but Elegant!

Lalaluna, on December 19, 2017 at 9:40 AM Posted in Style and Décor 1 26
Hi ladies!
My fiancé and I are quite geeky, and we want to find an elegant way to infuse our interests into our wedding decor - our favorite weddings were really personalised and reflected the couple! I’ve been scouring the Internet for ideas specifically for table decor but I don’t want to go too tacky/in your face about it. I still want our wedding to have a pretty/elegant atmosphere, so subtle is good. I’m struggling to meld the two! We love all things Harry Potter, Lord of the rings, princess bride, Star Wars, game of thrones, etc. I know we’re going to use a “always” cake topper from Harry Potter, my processional song will be the “storybook love” theme from Princess Bride, and we’ll have a sign to our reception room saying “no admittance except on party business” from the lord of the rings. So we have some ideas in place, but it’s the table decor that I’ve been uninspired about! We will have long rectangular tables that will seat about 10 people each side. Any brides pull off an elegant/geeky wedding!? I’d love to see your creations! Thanks in advance for your inspiration!

Use references to those movies/books as your table names? I Googled "Lord of the Rings wedding table decorations" and a bunch of pretty photos came up (mostly with trees and greenery), could maybe also do something like that with Game of Thrones.

Or you could have a mini R2D2 robot as your ring bearer and program him to do a dance. I catered in college and will always remember working at that wedding (I found it funny, but they all loved it).

FH bought different Marvel socks and tie bars for him and the groomsmen to wear. I am having our table numbers and some other signs done in a Harry Potter font (found on Etsy!) That's all we have done so far to bring some "geeky" things into the wedding.

Keep it simple, little details here and there or it will get overwhelming. Our garter, cake topper, and rsvp card were all doctor who related. We got married in an air and space museum on a moon rug. It's the little things that make it work.

We did very little touches. DH and his GM wore sorting hat cufflinks, and our last name happens to be a type of chess piece and he loves chess, so we had a cake topper made with "Mr. & Mrs. ____" and the silhouette of that chess piece (sorry, I don't want our last name in a picture linked to my pro, so I'm no longer posting pics of our cake topper).

FH and I are going for the same thing. The wedding is on the beach with a vintage glam/boho feel (because I love it!), but we have some subtle geeky touches here and there. On the backside of our cake will be Funko Pop Atlas and P-Body figures (from Portal). We will also have Companion Cube pins (also from Portal), mine in my bouquet and his on his lapel. We had such a good time playing the game together, we couldn't resist. We also plan to adjust the officiant reading a bit to include some geeky nods. All together, nothing over the top or really noticeable, but just some special things for us!

Your centerpieces could be bound leather copies of your favorite books stacked.

Hello! Fellow nerd here. What you have so far sounds great for tying in your interests. For tables, perhaps some table accents or centerpieces could match with your interests. I like the stack of books idea and there's also Like the books or maybe your placecards / escort cards can use the Star Wars font?

In addition to subtle, I would stick to 1 or 2 references only, OR make only the decor aspect of your wedding related to your interests. You're already doing HP and LOTR, can you stick with just those for favors, centerpieces, and other decor? Or can you highlight all of your interests in different table decor and leave it at that? I'm imagining tables with different magical locations, maybe Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, Rivendell, Gondor, Tatooine, then Mordor and Beyond the Wall for your least favorite guests (KIDDING).

Like PPs, I’m doing small things. I got paper flowers made out of pages from HP and Pride and Prejudice, which I’m adding into the centerpieces. We also considered the stack of books, then figured they would be too much of a pain or too expensive to find. I also love the idea of incorporating it into the table numbers.

I’m still mulling adding in some GOT, but weddings on GOT do not go well...

We're also trying to incorporate subtle nerdy aspects into the wedding. So far, I'm planning to walk down the aisle to the opening song from Game of Thrones; my fiance loves Masters of the Universe, so he has Skeletor cufflinks and socks to wear. We also collect Funko Pop figures, so we are going to have custom ones made of us and our cats to set up by the guest book Smiley smile And I'm working on some favorite book/movie quotes to work into the ceremony.

We'll see what else I come up with along the way!

Thanks so far everyone! The cogs are turning! Thinking about the long tables, our venue includes linens in whatever color we want so that will help us. I was thinking to keep costs down maybe doing something with dying glass jars to hold flowers and greenery? I’ll attach our general color scheme (doing forest green, teal, burgundy, and glittery gold accents). Maybe like dying wine bottles/mason jars teal or spray painting gold and having burgundy and like eucalyptus greenery stems? Maybe something like this and add little trinkets from nerdy things like a tardis, one ring, snitch? I’ve added some inspiration pics, nothing is exactly what I’m looking for but getting ideas!

I haven’t but definitely check out Pinterest and keep it simple. Too many details will be very overwhelming and won’t be as cohesive as you would probably like.
