Nervous about a migraine on the big day?

Alejandra, on October 27, 2019 at 10:31 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 21
Hi all,
our wedding is still over a year out but I’m nervous about FH having a migraine on the day of our wedding. He tends to get incredibly intense migraines that can last for days. The first time I ever saw him have one, it scared me to death. I was genuinely considering taking him to the hospital, and then he told me that was just normal. We do acupuncture for him and that keeps them at bay, and lately they haven’t been as frequent or as bad. They tend to get triggered by stress and changes in air pressure. We’re having a November wedding in Chicago next year. There’s been times in the past where he got one on the worst day. He missed my graduation because of it, and the first time I met his family in his home state he had one, so I met them all by myself. Obviously I don’t hold any of that against him, and there’s no way to predict it, but it does make me nervous. Advice?

Sounds like something much bigger than just your wedding day, he needs to see a doctor.

He has, it’s never lead to much. It runs in his family. His mom had them too and they’ve only recently stopped altogether.

Just for clarification, he doesn’t get them all the time. They are just intense when he does. Acupuncture helps them happen less often than before, and if he notices the signs on time we’ve found ways to help them die down to just an intense headache.

A coworker I work closely with has had migraines all her life, they run in her family, from her grandmother all the way to her own grandkids. She has a medication she takes for them when they get so bad she can't focus on work, I think it is Excedrin but will confirm tomorrow. Has he looked into anything like that?

Excedrin actually makes them worse for him! We noticed that when we didn’t have any and he took acetaminophen and it helped. Then the next couple times he did Excedrin and they make it worse. He can usually take acetaminophen and needs a shower and to sleep immediately in order to stop it from becoming a full on migraine.

That definitely sounds like a stress issue, as you've said... Making sure that he is properly hydrated and gets proper sleep and exercise the week of the wedding should definitely help your chances. I'm so sorry he has those! My coworker says she wouldn't wish them even upon her worst enemy.

I also get bad migraines, they’re the worst so I sympathize with him! I take Imitrex (Dr. prescribed) and it does wonders, especially if I take it when I first have signs one is coming on. Have him talk to his Dr. and see what they think about a prescribed medication. I always make sure to have it on me, and will def have it close by just in case for my wedding.

I’ll let him know about this! We recently moved so he his new doctor is my family doctor, who is fantastic. I’m not sure if he’s talked about that medication with another doctor but it’s worth a try. Thank you!

Thank you! Yes, they’re absolutely horrible for him. I’ve never seen anyone react like that to migraines. They’re also just terrifying for me to watch because I know I can’t help.

I get bad migraines and was worried I'd have one at my wedding (last week). At the first twinge of one, I took my medication and was able to stop it. Routine is really important with preventing migraines -- this means getting a normal amount of sleep, not skipping meals, taking any medications as prescribed at regular times... He should talk to his doctor about anything that could help for the big day... the doctor might be willing to prescribe meds in the short term to help get sleep, control anxiety, break a migraine (like prednisone), etc. If he isn't working with a headache specialist, he should try to find one ASAP. Not just for the wedding, but for a better quality of life overall.

Acetaminophen is in Excedrin. I'm not sure why Excedrin would make it worse. I specifically use Excedrin Migraine whenever I get migraines, it's one of the few things that can help me-sometimes. I'm not saying that it helping me would help him, just pointing out that it's the main ingredient in Excedrin

Is there a way to schedule an acupuncture appt the day or 2 before the wedding? See if someone on his side of the wedding party can keep an eye on him and try to keep him as stress free as possible before the wedding. Maybe book a couple's massage to relax sometime close to the wedding?

I get migraines frequently. I get botox injections every 3 months to help keep them down. I'm also on a preventative medication and i have 2 different options for taking care of them when they do show up. Have him talk to a doctor about possibly taking a preventive medication.

We couldn’t find Excedrin one day at the store when he got a migraine while we were on vacation so we got him acetaminophen instead cuz we figured it was close enough. After that we just started noticing that Excedrin made his migraine speed up but never stopped it, whereas acetaminophen does. I don’t get it either 🤷🏽‍♀️ But yes! We’ll probably book him a couple acupuncture sessions before the wedding. He goes once a month at the moment.

I might suggest a specialist again. I know he went to some when he was a little younger and they basically just told him, “Yep, you have migraines.” But we might as our family doctor for some medicine as well. Thanks!

I also suffer from intense migraines (have been for the past 2 years). I finally got a referral to a neurologist after trying almost anything and everything I can think of. My appointment is Dec. 18th, but my wedding is in 12 days on Nov. 9th.

My PCP recommended trying to either take magnesium tablets every day (my migraines are usually of the tension type) to help with muscle tension. Or she suggested taking a baby aspirin every morning to help decrease the occurrence of my migraines. I am not recommending to try these (as every person is different and has different reactions to certain treatments). Best bet might be to try calling his PCP and asking for recommendations, or since you have some time try visiting a neurologist to talk about options for controlling the migraines.

His are generally brought on by stress and he frequently has minor, minor headaches so I might bug him to go back to a neurologist. Thanks for the info!

I assume he has a neurologist he sees frequently? Migraines run in our family. My mother gets botox injections in her head, and it really helps her. She gets them every 3 months and she got them a few weeks before our wedding. I have prescribed migraine medication that works for me, and I stay super hydrated because it helps me. If stress triggers him, I'd hire a DOC to avoid wedding stress. I'm sure if he sees a neurologist they would be trying all sorts of treatments & medications until something works.

He needs to see a doctor and mention his fears. I have had chronic migraines for over a decade but my doctor has me take a drug called Cambia when I get them now (rare) which I swear is like a miracle. It's prescription only, but I wouldn't go anywhere without it. Having it on my person is like a migraine repellent for me.

Good to know! He hasn’t expressed these worries, he doesn’t tend to worry about the future that way. This is just me being nervous about it 😂
