New Rings vs. Heirloom Rings

Julean, on February 1, 2012 at 5:15 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 17

Just for fun, I was wondering how many of you out there have new engagement/wedding rings, and how many received heirlooms (mother's/grandmother's ring, etc.)

My set belonged to DH's Grandmother when she married his grandfather (now passed). they are circa early 1940's. I love them, and especially love that he gave me something with sentimental value to him. (Especially since his ex got a cheap set from Kay jewelers when they were married LOL)

    My rings are new.

However I did inherit a gorgeous heirloom ring from my Grammy, and it's priceless to me. My veil is heirloom too. We're a sentimental family. Smiley smile

    Mine is 1/2 and 1/2.

My center diamond was originally from my great grandmother's engagement ring. My grandmom had it reset into a different ring. When she passed away a few years ago, I received that diamond ring. My aunt had suggested that I have it reset into my engagement ring and I immediately knew that that was exactly what I wanted to have done. When it was time to get an engagement ring, my FH knew that I wanted that diamond reset so we picked out a one of a kind setting together.

I love that my ring both has something so sentimental, but is also so uniquely mine. It is perfect.

I have my Great-Great Grandmothers wedding band BUT it is greatly damaged and 2 sizes too small. (Also, my dad had given it to my mom and their marriage ended in divorce less than 5 years later!) I am hoping to use the diamonds in it to make my custom wedding band someday, BUT I dont think it will happen before we are married. Its a cost I have already decided isnt in the budget before the wedding...

    Love those rings ladies!

My co-worker just got engaged..and is literally throwing a FIT because its a small ring, looks more to me like a wedding band with diamonds, than the engagement ring, but it was his grandmothers! I told her its going to be a loooooong 2 years of resentment till they get married if she just does not accept that this is not the BIGGER PICTURE. She should be happy to marry her love. He has agreed to get her the ring of her choice to make it a set.

i have my grandmothers wedding ring, and I will wear it on a chain around my neck on my day Smiley smile

My first marriage, I had an engagement ring made from a stone from the ring I inherited from my grandmother.

This time, I didn't have an engagement ring at all. However, I was deeply honored to receive the wedding band that NotFroofy inherited from her grandmother back in Wales.

    FutureMrs.Ohler, I love your ring!

Mine's new but has a lot of vintage etching on the side, so it looks old. I like it Smiley smile

FH proposed with my great-grandmother's ring from 1912. He replaced the diamond though (with my family's permission). I love it! It's a white gold filagree design with an inset diamond.

I have heirloom rings from the 30's. They were my great grandmothers. I'll only wear them on special occasions though. They're not exactly structurally sound.

    Mine is all new.

FH's mom did offer to let Fh give me her grandmother's ring (FH's Great Grandmother) but FH turned it down..

It was not a diamond, it was Some type of stone. I had my heart set on a Marque cut diamond like my mom's diamond nothing against her ring but FH wanted me to be happy. (I had talked about the ring I wanted way before FH's mom had even told us about her ring)

He got his ex fiance a cheap ring he got at a pawn shop. Mine is something he spent time saving for and picking out very carefully.

I didn't receive my heirloom jewelry until after we were engaged, but I hope to someday use the stones from my grandmother's ring (which was reset into a necklace by my mother) and the stones from my mother's rings into a new ring, maybe for an anniversary. : )

Mine is 1/2 and 1/2 also. I have my great grandmother's diamond from her wedding set. She was married for over 50 years, so I hope that it means the same for me. I picked out my band. Together, my band and great grandmother's diamond are absolutely perfect. It is better than I ever imagined and definately bigger!
