New York City mini moon/honeymoon?

FutureMrsKC, on November 6, 2018 at 2:55 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 17

So, my southern FH has never been to the big apple, and for a while we considered going on a week long mini moon somewhere like renting a cabin in Tennessee, taking a 3 day cruise to the Bahamas, etc. Today I was on Expedia bundles and found out that for our (very) small budget we can actually afford to go to NYC for a week! I've been there before a few times years ago, but he never has.

Is this a terrible idea? Obviously we know it is going to be cold, but January is one of the cheapest times to actually visit. FH has lived in FL his whole life and has never experienced any kind of big city like NYC.

Is this a weird honeymoon idea?

We live in FL so we feel like we can go to the Bahamas or a beachy destination anytime.

We went to Washington DC in March two years ago. The day we landed, they had a "huge" (in their words" snow storm that closed down city buildings and schools. We are from Colorado so planned for the weather, and it was AMAZING to site see. Parking was so easy, there were so few people, we got to see everything up close and wait in almost no lines. I would totally go if you guys are okay with cold weather. Especially NY. We are going in December (fiance's first time) for Friday-Sunday so super short, for a wedding, and we are both excited to go just to do a few hours of site seeing!

That sounds amazing! Yes I'm from PA so I'm totally prepared and somewhat used to the colder weather but I just feel like NYC is something you have to experience in your life and we've talked about going before idk why it never came up as a honeymoon destination! There are a ton of great hotels in and around Times Square that are soooo affordable in January it's insane!

I think I just have reservations about it since it' not your typical tropical honeymoon I guess!

I live in NJ, January-March is prime blizzard season here so I’d be worried about flights possibly being cancelled/delayed (seriously last year we had 5 blizzards in a 4 week period) and just the cold in general, if you aren’t used to it!

I’m not saying not to do it, but just make sure you’re aware that there may not be ideal conditions. If you do come, definitely invest in some thermal underarmour to keep warm in, and plan for lots of indoor activities in case you’re too cold to do too much outside. If you’d like to do stuff like museums, good food, broadway shows, it could be a good idea to go in January. But if you’re expecting to like... walk through Central Park, spend time in Times Square, and other outdoor things it may just be too cold to be enjoyable.

For hotels too, I would actually advise not staying IN Times Square because the noise may travel up to your hotel room. I'd stay a few blocks away, like right outside of midtown is probably ideal. Near the action, but removed enough to have some quiet!

Yes I grew up in Pennsylvania so I definitely know how to dress for the cold/snow! Other than the flights being delaying I think it'd be fine! I also have been looking at hotels in Times Square so we could still experience that and be in that area even if the weather is bad. Thank's for the heads up, though! (I definitely plan to drag FH to a broadway show if we decide to go here!)

Sounds good! I definitely am not trying to discourage you I just wanted to make sure you had realistic expectations haha. January will probably be a lot better than December to avoid the crowds too!

Hi FutureMrsKC! The winter is actually my favorite time to be in New York City! My grandmother lives there, and there is actually more to do in the winter than in the summer! I do not think this is weird at all, it will just be more of a "to do" and "activity-filled" honeymoon, rather than a "soak up the sun relaxation" type! Some of my favorite things that I have done in NYC in the winter include going ice skating, visiting Central Park, going shopping, visiting Chelsea Market, seeing a Broadway show, going to a taping of The Tonight Show ft. Jimmy Fallon, and doing a Pizza tour (where you try all of NYC's critically acclaimed pizza spots)! You can absolutely fill your week with a variety of fun activities! Was there anything in particular that you wanted to do while there?

No I know you weren't lol! I like people to be realistic, I definitely know winter can be great and terrible to visit at the same time!

Wow, that all sounds amazing! I've been a few times in high school for the Macy's Thanksgiving parade, which was awesome! But technically, we'd only have about 3 full days there, we'd fly in Monday afternoon and leave Friday morning. I think we want to be a little go with the flow, wake up and decide what to do people, but we definitely will schedule a Broadway show for sure! And I feel like it's only right to go to Central Park! We are trying to stay in Times Square so that'll check that off of the list as well!

Haha totally. You said your FH has always lived in Florida but has he ever visited the northeast in winter? If not I’d definitely make sure you supervise what he decides to pack haha. My FH lived in Los Angeles until he was 19, sometimes in the dead of winter in New Jersey he’ll still literally put on a tank top and a winter coat over it and think that’s adequate, and then complain about being cold all day 😂 people from non-cold states just don’t understand layering! Hahaha

Yes! I grew up a dancer and doing musicals off and on! I made him watch the Wicked Halloween special last week but I think he actually really enjoys that stuff! I saw Wicked is on tour and I'd die to see that so it might be a must!

Hi FutureMrsKC! Yes, it's not your typical tropical honeymoon, but it's really unique and definitely a destination to experience! I personally think NYC would be great and have a lot to do and see! Smiley heart

Its definitely not a terrible idea, but aside from weather concerns listed below I'd be worrying about costs. Fine your hotel/flights are doable but the money you'll be spending on food/drinks/experiences is going to add up really quickly.

That's definitely true! We plan to book the honeymoon by the end of this month and then we will have other money saved up for the actual trip on top of any wedding money if people happen to gift us cash/checks!

I don’t think it’s weird! Not every honeymoon has to be tropical, especially if that’s more your every day life. I wouldn’t be too worried about the weather, you would be in museums, shows and shops most of the time anyway. If it snows it snows - the Northeast is prepared for it.
