Newbie flyer. Does this count as a personal item?

KentuckyWineBride, on November 2, 2016 at 7:04 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 31

I rarely fly and we're leaving for our honeymoon Monday. Would the bag on the left count as a personal item or is it too big? I'm taking a carry on too. I know the duffel on the right would. Ugh packing light is hard!

And what about spray cans? Are those allowed on planes?

I think most airlines will give you dimensions for limits on carry-ons and personal bags. Visit the website for the airline you'll be using, I'm sure they'll list it somewhere! They aren't all the same, depending on overhead and under seat space so I can't say for sure.

You're good. I've taken a roll on carry on bag that comes with luggage as my 'carry on' and my weekender vera bradley as my personal item before. roller bag goes up top in storage and my weekender stuffed full can fit under the seat in front of me. done it about 3 or 4 times, haven't had an issue.

Yeah I guess if it can fit under the seat then no one will know you have another one overhead anyways. Good point.

And no, spray cans will not. all liquids/spray or otherwise must fit in a quart sized zip lock bag and each container can't be larger than 3oz. unless you plan to put that spray/larger liquids into your checked baggage.

which if you do that i suggest also putting into a gallon zip lock bag incase they burst or leak during flight it doesn't ruin all your clothes.

It's hard to tell how big the bag is in the picture, but I'm sure it should be fine. I always use a larger bag like that for my personal item. You can always check online for their size requirements and measure the bag too

You definitely won't be able to take the sunscreen on with you. It can go in your luggage tho

The tote might be too tall. Look up the personal item sizing for your airline.

Aerosols are allowed in carry ons as long as you follow the 3-1-1 rule. The container cannot be more than 3.4 oz and all liquids/ gels/aerosols must fit in a single quart size ziploc.

That can would have to go in a checked bag. When we went to Mexico I paid for a checked bag solely so I wouldn't have to buy sunblock down there. It was cheaper to pay for the checked bag than to pay the resort sunblock prices ($32 for a small tube of sunblock).

We took 4 aerosol cans of sunblock, an 8 oz bottle, 2-3oz tubes, and DF had another 6 oz tube. We returned with a partial can, 1/3 of the big bottle, and part of one of the smaller tubes (it was facial sunblock).

Unrelated: you're leaving for your honeymoon on Friday but your wedding isn't until Sunday? Is it a destination wedding?

Yeah, just double check the airline you're flying, what their size dimensions are and measure it. might be too tall, but if you squish it down, you might be able to get away with it. although they have the authority to make you check the bag at the gate if they don't like your squish down method. haha

    Awww kitty!

Why you bringing beach towels? Where you going/staying. Never stayed at a hotel/resort that didn't provide beach/pool/shower towels. Those damn things take up precious space. For more shoes.

ETA: watch your luggage weight too. Can't be more than 50lbs or you have to pay an obnoxious fee for how overweight it is. I usually aim for 40lbs to offset the fact that their scale might be off compared to mine. which I wouldn't put past the airlines to rig...

Don't hotels have beach towels? Are you checking a bag, where are you going? Measure the bag to be sure!

When we flew to NY in March FH and I both took carry on suitcases and used backpacks as our personal item. I just stuck my purse in my backpack and I never ran into a problem.

Yeah it should be fine. A backpack, large purse, or tote all count as a personal item. I think the rule is that is has to fit under the seat. Your carry on goes in the overhead. I brought one like that plus a rolling bag on delta with no problems.

As an experienced traveler, I hate it when people carry everything on with them. Just check a bag.

No spray cans on carry on. Check the airline website on other liquids. I got away with tons last time I flew up north, but it's not always that way!
