Newly married, but I can't wear my wedding ring!

FutureMrsW, on October 21, 2014 at 2:39 PM Posted in Married Life 0 15

FH and I were engaged for 11 months.. of which, i wore my engagement ring the entire time. Well, I gave it back to him a week before the wedding to get cleaned/polished... and got it back the day before we got married.

We got married about 3 weeks ago and I have been having the most uncomfortable time wearing my wedding rings. My ring finger starts to itch and now I have a rash with tiny bumps going around my finger where the rings were. I have to put them on the other hand for a few days for it to heal, but I really want to wear my rings the right way!

I never had this problem with my engagement ring, so what gives? Both rings are white gold. I only added the matching band, but both rings are super uncomfortable now.

It may be that the added band caused you to fiddle/play with the rings more without realizing it, which irritated your skin. Is the finger you've been wearing them on doing okay? If so, I'd give your left ring finger time to heal and then try again - make a conscious effort not to fiddle with them more than necessary.

You may be allergic to the cleaner that was used. Maybe take it to another place to get cleaned.

Oh man that would stink. I have no clue unless they coated it with something.

On a different note (and to warn some other ladies in case their engagement ring is loose) my engagement ring is loose but I don't want to have it sized 1) because it makes the ring weak and easier to break 2) my fingers swell something fierce in the heat. But when I added my wedding band behind it, I guess because it pushed my engagement ring further down my finger, it's REALLY loose now. As in it almost fell off once or twice.

I'm thinking there is a chance you are allergic to the polish/cleaner that the used? Also....I do have a friend that has a metal allergic and her skin gets the same way if she is not wearing sterling silver or 14 karat gold (or plus)....are you POSITIVE that the band IS gold? There are a couple chemicals online that she uses (mostly from Amazon) that she has to coat the underside of the jewelry that touches her skin with this product and it keeps her from breaking out when she wears "fake" stuff

I'm allergic to everything other that gold. I just take clear nail polish and put it on the part of the jewelry that touches my skin.

It's also possible that with both rings on, more moisture is getting trapped between your skin and your rings.

Clean the rings yourself with mild soap & water (to get off the residue of the cleaner the jeweler used). Make sure the rings and your hand are dry before you put the rings back on.

Maybe leave the rings off at night when you're sleeping.

    @Maltese - The polish/cleaner is a good point.

    What Nancy T said.

Also, it could be rhodium that's irritating your skin. "Rhodium, a silvery white metal related to platinum, is often used to plate yellow gold to make it into white gold. And even white gold with nickel is often rhodium-plated to make it appear whiter and shinier. Although the initial plating will protect you against any nickel in the gold, it eventually wears off over a period of months or years. This leaves the white gold (alloyed with nickel) in contact with your skin." You can take it to get re-plated, which is often covered by your insurance. If not, I've been told it costs about $40-$50

That is strange. We've had my ring cleaned twice from the same jeweler and i never had this reaction. My initial thought was maybe my finger just needed some getting used to wearing two rings because my e-ring never gave me any problem.

I'll try cleaning it when i get home and attempt to wear them again this weekend once my ring finger is healed.

I did have a similar issue with my E ring just a few weeks ago. That's when I found all this out about nickel and rhodium. My E ring's been on since January! I have been a lot more careful about making sure both my hands and ring are dry before putting my ring back on. That includes when I lotion my hands. Seems to have worked out just fine.

I have the same thing. Its from washing your hands or taking a shower and letting the water sit between your rings and your skin. Mine flares up every so often. I went to medpoint a while back because I had the same thing in an other spot on my other hand and the lady said it's a mild case of eczema. I don't sleep with my rings on when I have the rash and I apply cortizone 10 and it clears the rash up. Just try not to let water sit underneath them and when you wash your hands wipe where your ring sits really well and make sure it's dry.

    Hope this helps!

The other thing you could try is wearing just your wedding ring for a bit once the rash is cleared up. Or wear your Ering on your right hand. That would help you to figure out if it's the wedding band itself or the fact that the two rings are trapping moisture. My mom has always had that problem with her two rings and it was one of the reasons we decided to just go with an upgraded wedding band instead of two rings. Good luck!

I had this happen with my engagement ring, and another ring a year or so ago. It is the cleaner they used. I had a allergic reaction just like that. I would sleep with my ring off and a band aid with polysporin on it to get the rash to go away. I also took my ring to a place that steam cleans the ring. That way no chemicals are used. Haven't had the issue since.
