Newlywed Fund?

Genevieve, on April 20, 2019 at 9:17 AM Posted in Registry 0 8
My FH and I are struggling with our registry because we have ~129 guests and we only found 60 things to put on our registry. He has been living in "our" apartment for two years and has slowly gathered almost everything we might need.
We really want to add a "newlywed fund" because he has student loan debt and we would also like to be home owners asap.
So my question for you all is: what is the best way to set up a fund? It would be nice if we could find a safe place online that people could give money to that didn't change a fee. Any ideas?

You aren’t going to find a site that doesn’t charge a fee. They all charge one because at the very least they need to make the money back that they spend allowing credit card purchases (usually 3%). Most people understand newly married couples need money- whether you’re paying down debt or buying a home, money is a necessity we could all use more of. I would just stick with your registry of 60 items and then try and spread through your wedding party and parents that you’re saving up for things in case people ask them what you need.

A lot of people give money as is. If they go on the registry and don't see anything they like, the majority of people will give cash/a check at the wedding. At least, that's how it works in my area of the northeast.

All the sites charge fees, which is why we just accepted cash/checks. We did a small registry, which generally gives people a hint you would prefer cash/checks. We also told several friends/family we weren't really doing a registry and why. Everyone we told respected and totally understood our decision and gave us cash/checks. Some people did buy things off our registry. We then put the money into an investment account.

Don’t register or have a small registry. People will gift cash. Simple and no fees.

A lot of people will bring cash some guest may not bring anything plus couples or families you will get 1 gift from. So I think 60 this is good with out a fund.

Most guests find it very tacky to ask for money that way. The majority of guests give money instead of gifts anyway.

Honeyfund and Wanderable give your guests options to give the gift as cash or check. So basically, they just go to the "registry" and "sign up" to give something and then bring the cash/check to the wedding. Also, you can spread the word about your Venmo or PayPal ID and list it on the page.

Thank you! I ended up signing up on honeyfund because it seemed to make the most sense!
