Nickel Free Ring questions

Lisa, on May 14, 2011 at 1:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

Does anyone know where I could find nickel free rings?? I know with white gold they can mix the gold with copper, zinc, and palladium instead of nickel.. Also, I know platinum is hypoallergenic but it is crazy expensive. Im a simple girl. I had already picked out a ring that i loved and it just SCREAMS: ME! But, it is 10K White Gold..would they make the ring with palladium for extra? (Its at Kay Jewelers) I was reading somewhere that gold and white gold need rhodium something, and they are really easy to scratch. In your opinion, if it were to between the white gold without the nickel, and platinum.. which would you choose? In the long run would platinum be worht the cost because it is low maintenence? Im just trying to figure out what would be easier for my skin to handle.

I have platinum and love it -- no maintenance.

    What about sterling silver?

Can you get the ring in 14k white gold? That's nickel free. I have the same problem

White gold is a gold rhodium mix, when the rhodium 'rubs' off the ring will start showing a yellow coloration to it. That's why they need to be re-rhodiumed (if that is even a word). Usually rings come with a warranty in which they will re-size it and apply rhodium coatings to it to keep the color white.

Silver does need to be polished and cleaned constantly. Unlike gold, silver is more reactive and certain chemicals might stain the ring and your skin as well.

A lot of jewelers offer maintenance plans that are included in the price of the ring in which every six months you can take the ring and have it cleaned, so the maintenance might be at no cost to you.

If you wear a sterling silver ring all the time, you won't need to polish it.

Well the white gold is mixed with copper, zinc, and nickel. Im actually going to get a palladium ring. Its in the platinum family and is hypoallergenic. The only issue is only some jewelers will resize it...but as long as I know they DO resize it.. ill be fine

Silver can tarnish and will scratch easy ... what if you go with a higher k of gold like 24 will that still bother you??? if so i would go with the 14k white gold or platnium you might be able to talk to the store about getting it mixed with something else but i doubt they will do that they are usually mass produced maybe if you go to a local jeweler that does their own work might be able to do that for you

Im designing it on zales website and you can pick which metal you want. I picked the pallidium because its pretty much like platinum, but its not as pure here is a description of it

Palladium has a natural gray-white luster. It doesn't tarnish or need to be rhodium plated, so there is less maintenance. Palladium is a platinum group metal and is 95% pure.

It is hypoallergenic, so it will not cause allergic reactions that may be experienced by other metals. It is also less dense and therefore feels much lighter in weight than platinum.

Glad you said that Lisa because white gold DOES have nickel in it. I had a friend who was allergic to it and i warned her no white gold but was convinced it was nickel free...long story short, she ignored me and had a reaction so bad her ring was cut off!

Platinum. Its actually not that expensive; you have to remember you get what you pay for.

I have a CRAZY nickel allergy too (even the button on my jeans gives me rash). FH got me a palladium ring and it has been PERFECT. Palladium looks just like platinum but is less expensive.

As for gold - I would stay away from it completely! How horrible would it be for you to be allergic to your wedding ring... With my nickel allergy I can't wear gold at all.

I have a 14k white gold ring and apparently, it still is made with nickel because I am allergic to it. Not all 14k white gold is created equal I guess.
