No dancing.... so games!!

Cassie, on May 22, 2020 at 4:46 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 13
We’re getting married on August 2nd, 2020 in Ohio and our governor announced yesterday starting June 1st we can have up to 300 guests (a little high if you ask me) and dancing is prohibited! FH and I had a special dance planned out and everything that we’ve been practicing for months so I’m a little disappointed. Hopefully dancing is allowed in august but if it’s not, any recommendations for games/activities we can do while social distancing instead? So far thinking we’ll do the Shoe Game. Not doing a garter or bouquet toss. Invited 100 including plus ones but realistically expecting around 50-60 guests. It’s an outdoor venue with a barn where we’ll eat inside. TIA!

What would you think of hiring entertainment for a dinner theatre type thing? Maybe a who-dunnit mystery theatre or a medieval King’s feast with actors who play out a story throughout the evening and get tables involved in different things. Luahs do this too with dancers, fire twirlers, music, etc. IDK what your theme is but these are some alternatives to open dancing

There are companies that rent out games (think: giant jenga) for weddings and corporate events. That may be a way to keep all your guests engaged.

I'm in Ohio, too, and our wedding is scheduled for July 11th. Our venue is going to add an additional second dance floor outside, which will give more space because the restriction is that some places may not be able to have dancing because of dance floor size. But, like you, we're hoping things aren't as strict as we get closer, especially as the weather gets hotter and more humid. I like your idea of getting games, so maybe we'll get a deck of cards for each table and people can play card games? I'm a little nervous because I just don't see how we can have a reception with no dancing? Obviously we can have our dance, but if people space out and only dance with their SO I don't see why not. I think we'll still do the tosses because that won't require EVERYONE to be up and those who are up whether it's the girls' turn or the guys' turn can just space out?

My venue has an outdoor dance floor! I’m pretty annoyed because I listened to DeWine’s update yesterday and didn’t hear him say anything about dancing specifically. But then I got an email today from my venue saying that “dance floors are prohibited”. I feel like they’re making it their own policy and are trying to blame it on DeWine

I think he did end up releasing something that said no dancing which is SO frustrating. But I'm hoping that by July it'll change, especially if they can space people out.

Oh gotcha. And yeah I’m hopeful. If he’s willing to let groups gather up to 300, you’d think he would be willing to let people dance

On behalf of myself and all other actors out there... not only do I love this idea, but I hope so many people do this!

There's also so many stand by games - from ye old bingo and simon says to - heavily depending on your crowd - cards against humanity (they need to be VERY chill).

All of the ideas above are great! You can also make the games some kind of tournament depending on your crowd. For example, our families love to play cards, so we could do something of a card tournament for entertainment.

I think you would be able to dance by august. But if not games are good scavenger hunt, shoe game, celebrating love game- You ask all married couples to stand at their tables hoping yo have a few. And have them eliminated by the years 1-3,5,10 etc. and the last couple standing gets like flowers, applauds and ask them for wedding advice.

I think you and your FH can still do a first dance. It'll just be the two of you, and you'll be several feet from your "audience." But as for not letting guests dance, especially that many... I dunno. I'm surprised they would allow 300 people at an indoor event at all.
