No dj at our wedding

We have decided to not have a dj and just use Pandora, without commercials or another form of music instead of paying a ridiculous amount of money.. Anyone else not having a dj at their reception?

Eh. I would consider that to be cheap.... djs can make or break a wedding... they announce people and speeches and cake cutting. I would never think of not having a dj but I suppose that's a personal choice

I'm not having a DJ (we have found someone to emcee), but I would never choose Pandora. You have little to no say in what music is playing -- you're pretty much stuck with whatever they think you want to listen to. At least pay for a month of Spotify premium for the wedding and create a playlist...put a bit of thought into what music you're going to be listening to. Do you really want great aunt Gertie to be subjected to "A** & T*tt*es" by Three Six Mafia if Pandora decides it's similar to "At Last" by Etta James? Awkward...

Dj's,like photographers and officiants are on site for a set amount of hours, but that is not where the work begins and ends. There are many more hours and expenses involved than that.

My sister had a party of 200, no DJ and people danced all night long. It really depends on your venue, your ability to plan and having someone you can trust to take care of it. I'm putting my brother in law in charge of our announcements and music. He's good at it and he's free. I wouldn't just turn on Pandora though, that's a recipe for every song you don't like to play.

A dj may be a ridiculous amount of money to some and not to others. It depends on what's important to you for your wedding. I would however recommend Apple Music over pandora. I'm sure everything will turn out amazing

I was going to have one because I knew they would provide the sound equipment/take care of MC duties, but tbh I and especially my fiancé are VERY particular about music -- I was a music major in college and he's an enormous music enthusiast so I did some research and I think we'll honestly be happier without one. We can borrow sound equipment from a friend of his who is a professional musician. We won't need to make many announcements so we'll likely split those duties among his groomsmen. I found an app called WeddingDJ that cost only $8, and I can load all my songs and playlists onto it. The app takes care of fading in and out, cross fading songs, and stops at the end of every playlist/event song until it's told to play again. If you're not willing to put in the time to curate a playlist, is there someone you can ask to do it for you? Fiancé did the playlist for his dad's wedding a couple of years ago.

We're having a smallish brunch reception in a venue without dance floor, so I feel we can get away with no DJ. We've recruited the 19 year-old RTF student nephew to manage our premium Spotify playlist.

Perhaps you could recruit a responsible friend to manage your playlist, or find an "aspiring" DJ for less? My brother found their slightly less qualified DJ through a friend who plays in a band... they paid around $100-150 and it was good enough.

I agree on Spotify, and making several playlists.

I see a lot of "I didn't have a DJ... but my ___(brother, friend, uncle, dad... etc) took care of starting/stopping the music" So, you did have a DJ, you just opted to make a friend work, which is fine if that's all that fits your budget and your style.

If you can't hire a professional, then I suggest using iTunes. Create a smart playlist. Or a few playlists.

Also, download to your iphone or ipad the app called "remote" it is from apple. This app will allow you to control iTunes on your PC or Mac via wireless. That way someone can start/stop/search songs from their seat (provided the venue has wifi and a nice set of speakers)

I think DJs are definitely worth the money. They are skilled, can create the atmosphere you want and they have professional equipment.

My cousin used an iTunes playlist and portable speakers for his wedding. After an hour, the speakers started crackling horribly and the sound kept cutting out. That happened for the next couple hours of the dance party. I will gladly pay a professional to ensure that doesn't happen to me!

I wouldn't use Pandora for your wedding. You'll end up with repeated songs and songs that just don't fit what you're going for because of their song choices. Are you doing a first dance and parent dances? Because you'll obviously choose specific songs for that and the silence while you switch between Pandora and your ipod/laptop will be awkward and confusing.

If you're set on not hiring a DJ, I highly recommend you make your own playlist and assign someone to kind of play MC.

If I was having a dance reception a dj would be a must.

however I am not but I am still using my own computer and iTunes playlist for music during the cake/punch reception.

my recommendation to you since you've made your mind up: use a playlist not Pandora. and get someone else to actually be in charge of the music so it's not you and your husband.
