No DJ - No Problem!

Shelby, on January 3, 2017 at 10:27 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 2 11

I just wanted to share my latest wedding hack: SPOTIFY! since we have no DJ (small reception, not much dancing) we were struggling to find the right music to put on our ipod to play. The venue is great and offered us to use their sound system for free, they have a cord to plug in the ipod, but I was stressing about having enough music for the cocktail hour and reception and have all our song blend together naturally. Enter Spotify. Since it's my first time using it (I know, I'm WAAAAYYY behind the times) I was able to get their premium version for a free 7 day trial and was able to download several playlists to my phone to play offline. All in all I'm feeling very happy about this solution. I'll come back and let y'all know how it went since our wedding in Saturday. Hope that helps someone else in the same boat!

Good luck. Dancing all night was a huge priority for us and having a professional DJ made it happen. He also kept the flow of the night moving with announcements for speeches, special dances, etc.

@mrslmac I know this isn't new information, I was more sharing my joy at figuring it out this week 4 days before my wedding.

Good luck. This sounds super stressful to me tbh.

So I'm guessing you don't want people to dance at your wedding and are just looking for background music? If so, you'll be fine.

If you're expecting people to dance... yeah... good luck with that one...

This works for some people especially if they don't want a lot of dancing at their wedding (why wouldn't you?), but I always like to share my personal anecdote alongside a "life hack" like this:

I was a BM in a wedding and they also didn't have a DJ. They connected an ipod to a sound system to play music. It worked pretty well for a while, but as the bride and groom got more drunk they did more song hopping - every minute or two they would change it so it was hard to manage as a guest.

On top of that, as guests got more drunk they would take control of the ipod and play whatever video or stupid song was the current internet meme.

If you dont care if this happens or aren't worried about the possibility, then go right ahead.

If you don't mind me asking, who's doing the introductions and announcements?

@lb you're right it will be good for background music which is all we want. We're not having a dance party as our reception is a dinner at a restaurant and we're going out afterwards to some bars.

@ssjkarigan we aren't going to have any announcements. We're only having 45 guests and we don't even know if we'll need a microphone (but they have one we can use for toasts). Our venue is small and we are not doing a lot of traditional wedding stuff like announcing entrances etc. my FH doesn't want to be the center of attention at all.

I used spotify premium for my wedding.

It IS useful- I actually wound up continuing to use it- least for the last 3 months- not sure how I feel about it since I can't use it at the gym like I wanted- but oh well.

But it was useful for the wedding- I had 3 separate playlists and it worked great.

    (live music for the ceremony)

At Karigan- to answer your question- (not really directed at me I know)- but we didn't have any announcements or introductions. No one died.

We are just going to pull together a playlist in my iTunes library before we leave and upload it to my phone. We are only doing a first dance, and have enough staff and a coordinator who can take care of cueing the music and announcements. We only have 20-30 guests though, and a lunchtime reception, so we don't expect to have a big dance party anyway. If we had closer to 50? Sure, then we would probably have hired a DJ.

@JoRocka - thanks for the validation! I'm so happy it worked out for your wedding. Smiley smile

@MNA - we did a combo of that for some of our specific song we wanted for the ceremony and first dance. I'm with you though no dj necessary. #teamsmallwedding
