Melanie
Dedicated April 2021

No dj

Is anyone else forgoing a professional music service and making their own playlists? Our wedding is only going to be a maximum of 40 people (if everyone says yes) and I just don’t feel the need to shell out $1000+ for maybe 3 hours of dancing. Struggling with what music service to use though to make my own playlist. Spotify premium, Apple Music, YouTube?

We skipped the DJ for our small guest list and worked for months to put a playlist together on Spotify. We were never going to have a packed dance floor (many of our guests were older and/or have mobility issues) but we had a decent amount of dancing and many compliments on the music. The only drawback to not hiring a DJ is if you plan on having a lot of the typical reception moments. We skipped all but the first dance and cake cutting. I made separate playlists for cocktail/dinner hour and another for the rest of the reception which made an easy transition for the first dance. With a smaller, more intimate guest list it was no problem making these short anouncements. Anything more than that might have become an issue. I HIGHLY recommend listening to your playlist a few times to make sure it hits the notes you want, flows well, and doesn't make you cringe when you hear a stray lyric like I did on a few of the songs I immediately removed. lol

We did this using Spotify. I recommend it with 2 conditions: (1) you need to not care if people don’t dance. People did dance at our wedding and I was really happy about it but I honestly didn’t care much either way (we had a Sunday afternoon wedding) (2) you need to designate someone in charge of the playlist. Just pressing play once and letting it go won’t go over very well. You need someone to read the room to decide what type of song to play and learn what songs people are responding positively to

    I agree with Gen.

We had a playlist for our dinner but no dancing. If you want guests to dance, and a fun party vibe, I would highly suggest a DJ.

My brother made a playlist on Spotify premium and it worked pretty well. We also don't want to spend lots of money so might take a similar path.

We are having a Spotify playlist at our wedding. We know our friends and family will dance but we don't want a DJ.
