No DJ/iPod Playlist

Hi all! So my fiance and I decided a while ago that we didn't want to hire a DJ for our wedding. He can make a good playlist and knows what to do (crossfade, get good equipment, play music other people want to hear, etc.) and we've been looking forward to putting together songs. We plan to buy an iPod touch, download the Wedding DJ app and set up playlists for the different parts of the night. We would ask a friend to make any necessary announcements (first dances, toasts, etc.). And we plan on being on the dance floor all night to encourage everyone to be dancing too.

Anyway, our parents seem very concerned that our party will be a dud since there is no DJ. Even though we keep telling them that we're capable of doing this, they're making me a little worried. Has anyone else out there done their own music or been to a wedding with their own music and can give me some success stories to go back to our parents with? Many thanks!!

I see no problem with iPod weddings if you want something more low key, but if you want a dance party and plan to be on the dance floor most of the night, I would hire a DJ. The good ones know how to read a crowd to play whatever is going to get the most people out on the floor; that is impossible to do ahead of time.

There's a reason why DJ's are certified. They are professionals that know what they are doing. If you do it yourself, something could go wrong, and the last thing that any bride or groom, or guest, should be doing is messing with the equipment. If your expecting dancing and announcements, your parents are right. Make cuts somewhere else to fit a DD in your budget.

I would side eye a wedding so bad if they had beautiful lavish decorations, big floral arrangements, favors, a nice photographer, etc. but skimped out on a DJ.

I am doing the same thing. If you want, message me and I will let you know how it goes on Saturday. I've read so many blogs of people who did this and it turned out well. It's just a matter of planning for it.

I wouldn't do this. I was at a wedding where the only reason no one missed the first dance and cake cutting was because the venue was so so small. But no one heard the announcements from the friends. The dance floor was not very full either....it just wasn't good

We are also considering using an iPod and not a DJ and I'm getting flack from my mother about it.

Like most said it will determine the feel you want for your wedding. We are having a brunch reception so didn't want a full dance party feeling. We also pretty anti-DJ as I've had a quite few bad experiences with them.

My biggest concern is having the right equipment and making announcements if you want them; but it seems like you have a good plan for that.

We are also considering a string duo or violinist in place of DJ or full band and that paired with iPod should balance out nicely.

That is a lot of work and there is a lot more to a Dj than music. You can find a cheap Dj for not that much more than you'll pay for an iPod touch!

We considered this but recently went to a wedding where they tried to do this and it failed. We decided to spring for a DJ from 7-11. The place we are having our reception doesn't have an end time so we also have a playlist as a back up for anyone who isn't ready to go home just yet. We just got worried that with all the announcements and the very different groups of people we would fail on this end.

DJs really can be hit or miss and I really don't see the point in investing **** on a dj who may ruin the experience. The venue that I chose has a sound system that comes in the price including the wireless Microphones so we won't need to rent any equipment and one of my former employees is a DJ and I am hiring him to man the music. If it turns out bad (which I'm sure it won't) at least I didn't waste a chunk of my budget.

    E.T.A.....

This works for me because my wedding will be small with only people DF and I are close to (under 100 ppl). It all depends on the crowd. If you're having a big wedding and inviting ppl you don't know so well I would agree with the ladies about a DJ.

I think iPod is just fine! I have been to tons of weddings. I have said at the majority of them, gee, they should have just.played music through their ipod. The other weddings, the dj was too loud. You could not visit. And no one was dancing. At all. A few iPod weddings I've been to has had dancing, but it wasn't too loud so people that don't wanna dance can actually talk and visit with friends and family .

I would really look into hiring a DJ/MC. My brother and his wife decided to DIY most of their wedding to include the music. They created a playlist on their Spotify account. It wasn't long enough for the duration of their wedding, after a while guests started to complain and attempted to change the music. The DJ/MC will actually manage the flow of your party not just play music.

We are also doing our own music. All if the DJs I have seen and talked to have a very dance club feel to them and were very out off when I said I didn't want that. We plan on having jazz/swing for dancing and I made a playlist of love/happy songs for background music. We are using spotify and a borrowed sound system. We are lucky because my best friends husband is a musician and he will be running the music and making announcements. I recommend choosing someone who you trust but isn't family so that they aren't missing your big day. We also have a day of coordinator who will help him with timing. I understand why so many people are rejecting this idea. It's more stress on you to plan this. But if you are good at planning and organizing, I think you can do it. Mist DJs are at least $2,000. I would rather put that money somewhere else.

What are your wedding details? Guest count. Casual. Indoor Outdoor.

Also do you plan to have people up dancing?

I've been to a wedding without a DJ. It was 20 people and no dancing. It was in a backyard and very low key. An iPod worked well for them.

That wedding in my mind is an exception. For weddings over 30 people, I think you need a DJ/MC.

Honestly our DJ was one of the best decisions we made during wedding planning. We had an afternoon wedding and he had people on the dance floor the whole time. He knew how to read the room and play the right music at the right time, something that can't be done when you make your playlist in advance. I would strongly consider hiring one especially if you want the dance party vibe.
