No hyphen name change

Em, on September 30, 2019 at 8:37 AM Posted in Married Life 0 3
So for various reasons I wanted to add my husband's last name to mine without a hyphen - so my name is First Middle Maiden Married.

This was a breeze at the social security office. However, at the Secretary of State (Michigan's version of the DMV) I was told they couldn't do a space in my last name. She said even if she typed it in with a space it would add the hyphen automatically and that it also does this for people who have a space in their middle name or first name.

Since I had waited 3 hours to be helped, I just said ok and got my license with my name listed as First Middle Maiden-Married. I'm not from Michigan and we plan on moving in about two years anyway so I thought hopefully I can just fix it whenever we move to a new state.

I'm a little worried about my names not matching though. Has anyone had this problem? I'm guessing I should have my work and bank and doctor changed to match my social security card since that needs to match for taxes and insurance. But will I have issues when I go in and I don't have an I.D. that matches that name exactly? Or should I just be able to explain that it shouldn't have a hyphen but their computer system doesn't allow spaces. That sounds like it's going to get annoying.

Also does anyone have any experience with this for airline tickets? I fly 2-4 times a month for work and need to update my SkyMiles account. I guess my plan right now is to hope my passport gets updated correctly (with no hyphen) and then change my SkyMiles to match that. But then I wonder if I always have to use my passport. I guess that's not the end of the world. It would be really nice if I could use either because I'm not sure how I'm going to travel while my passport is getting updated.

Anyway so I'm just wondering, are people picky about the hyphen or will people accept my ID that has a hyphen that's not supposed to be there?

Also, what states allow double barreling (two last names no hyphen)? We are thinking of moving to Utah or Colorado but aren't going to know for another year.

Or should I just get everything with a hyphen now to simplify things? Does social security even allow hyphens? Do all states allow hyphens?

Thanks!

I don’t know what states don’t hyphen on the license, but one of my bridesmaids did the same exact thing 3 years ago. Shes never had a problem with her passport and stuff, and she travels pretty frequently. She has a double last name and it seems to work for her 🤷🏻‍♀️ I hope that helps.

I work for the airline you won't have a problem with the name. the hyphen isn't that big of a deal as long as all 4 names are in same order on documents.
