No kids exception

Jade, on October 9, 2019 at 12:22 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10
My FH and I have already decided that we will not be inviting kids under the age of 12. I have a very small family, so I would like them all to attend if they can. My only cousin on my moms side would have to fly in for our wedding and she has two kids.

My question is: would it be okay To give her an exception to the no kids rule if she needs it because she is traveling. I assumed that I would address her invite to just her and her husband, but if she asks if her two kids could come I will say yes because it isn’t fair for her to have to try and find a sitter in a different state. This would be the only exception to the no kids wedding because everyone else lives within 30 minutes of the venue. Or would this just cause too many issues? We really don’t have the space or $ to pay $80 per kid, and there is no kids menu. I also cannot ask her daughter to be a flower girl and have an exception made that way. My niece passed away recently and she would’ve been my flower girl - seeing someone else in the role would just devastate my entire family and especially my sister/MOH.

Just a thought...could you arrange for a local sitter for her kids? That might make things easier for her and for you.

I think seeing someone's kids there would make other parents upset theirs weren't the exception. I'd just stick to no kids at all

I think you can give her the exception.. For one, she's family.. and two, she is traveling and has a HUGE added expense compared to other guests. Besides it's a private conversation, most guests will think to themselves that she didn't follow the rule..

That is true. One of the reasons for no kids is because a lot of my friends have just married someone that already has multiple kids, so the amount of kids was just way too much for our venue and budget. She’s the only family member that has kids.

We are only having kids who are family.. all others we have stated that unfortunately there isn't enough space.

I think an exception for is completely appropriate! As PPs said, she is family and out of state!

You can’t say “no kids” to someone and then have kids there, but you can invite kids only in circles — so ONLY family kids *is* totally appropriate

I agree with PPs that an exception in this case is ok. You could also offer to help *find* childcare in the area if your cousin wants to have a kid free night.

You're cousin might not want to travel with a four person family, you never know.

Also, so sorry about your loss. Too sad!!

I personally am only allowing close family to bring kids. Mine and fh nieces, nephews, children, etc. Personal friends and coworkers i told them adults only. No kids except close family. If anyone feels offended or doesnt like it can decline coming if they see fit. If they are considerate enough for your budget and rules then they shouldnt have a problem
