No time off available for wedding

Elijah, on February 21, 2021 at 4:08 PM Posted in Planning 0 27
So I’m getting Married in April! Yay! However I’m not sure what to do right now because I don’t have any time off. It’s a part time job and they offer slotted Pto but it doesn’t accumulate too quick but either way I don’t have any. We plan to get married on a Sunday and take a week honeymoon. Can I just ask for unpaid time off? Or anyone know what I can do?

For my work I bid for all my vacation December of the year before- ex: December 2021 for all of 2022. Due to my low seniority, I probably won’t get the week off I need. At my job my options are to day trade with someone or basically call in. I already know I probably won’t get to have my honeymoon right after the wedding unfortunately. See if your job has the option to day trade or have someone cover your shift (swap shifts)

I’d see if anyone is willing to swap shifts with you (if that’s an option). Talk with your manager to see what your options are. Might just have to take the hit & have unpaid time off.

Congrats! You're in a bit of a risky situation. You can ask for unpaid time off, but what if they say no? You may have to thread lightly with that conversation if you haven't been working there long, as some managers would think you're not committed and may end up just letting you go from your job. Have you already paid for the honeymoon/will you lose money if you have to cancel it?

Have you had this job through all wedding planning? It would have made more sense to plan your wedding/honeymoon around time off. Wouldn't want to risk getting fired when starting off a marriage

I think this is something you would have to ask your boss. The rules at my job is that you can only request off 2 days a month and obviously you can do weeks vacation. But every boss is different at my work. I started out with no time in one department and my family was going on vacation when I started I asked the boss if I could take 4 days unpaid in a row off. And my boss was ok with it. When I got in another department the boss there was very by the book and wouldn't let people take more than the 2 days off a month we are allowed to request.

I mean this is up to your company.. you can ask. My company does not allow unpaid time off.

The only person who can really tell you the answer to this is your boss. Unfortunately not all companies operate the same way so even if someone on here takes unpaid time off doesn’t mean you’ll be able to. I’ve worked for some companies that allow it and others where the answer is an absolute no.

Solid advice however don’t have the option to switch shifts or really have someone cover with the way things are structured

I agree with you and would have loved to do that however I don’t accumulate time off fast enough to make sense to plan it around that unless I was willing to wait a year lol 😅 it’s only a part time job so the fact they even give pto is already a miracle lol. To give you an example it takes about 1-1.5 months to accumulate 1 day off to generate enough time off for our honeymoon and wedding it would take til the end of the year almost lol.

Good luck talking to the bosses!

I don't get any PTO. But can just take off anytime I'm not in a contract with a hospital. Lol.

We can’t answer that. You’ll have to ask your job about unpaid leave.

Shoot yeah we have to call in if it doesn’t get approved but we have to have hours in our banks. As much as I want honeymoon right away, I’ve just kind of accepted the fact that I probably won’t get it

I had this same issue but apparently my company has a policy regarding special life events. My wedding fell under the policy so I was able to get my time approved that way. It just took me being very transparent with my supervisors.

What is paid time off??! Lol i have NEVER worked a job that gave me that, if i wanted off, i could take the day off, but i dont get paid for it, and with bills to pay it hurts to even call out sick... thankfully though, with my current job it will be slow enough i can take a 1-2 week honeymoon and not be sorely missed, and husband will be main “bread winner” so FINALLY getting a 1-2week vacation/honeymoon is looking good right now!!!

We wouldn't know your employer's policy. You need to inquire with them. I hope you didn't already book a honeymoon without checking with them first

Reach out to HR. Some companies allow unpaid time off, some dont. Some may allow you to use your PTO before it’s accrued, don’t ask your boss ask HR if possible.

Not sure how you feel about your job in general, but another option may be to find a new job and let them know while going through the interviewing/hiring process that you already have a scheduled vacation and have that written in that you would get said week off for the honeymoon.
