No Toss- Still Wearing a Garter?

C.C., on June 3, 2017 at 1:21 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 22

We've opted to do without the garter toss. No shade to those who do decide to, personally it would just make me uncomfortable in front of all those people! Are you doing a Carter toss? For those who are not doing a garter toss, will you still wear a garter? Just wanted to get everyone's opinions on this and see what others are doing!

DF and I are eloping, so no tosses of course. I still have a garter set I got to wear. He can remove it later on when we're alone, lol.

    Nope. Didn't wear one, either.

Neither did my sister, the brides in the 2 other bridal parties I've been involved in, or my mother 40 years ago. I'm 30 and I've never seen even seen a garter.

MNA- that's a fun idea! I guess I never thought that you could still do the "removal" but on your own lol. We'll probably do that!

Dreamer- that's so interesting! I guess it really is dying out then. I've only seen it at one wedding, and it was really awkward IMO.

We're not doing a garter toss... but I'm still wearing one, later that night he will remove it. I feel it's a little more personal that way

We're not going to do the garter toss either, but I will probably still wear one. Or maybe I'll just put it on when FH and I are alone after the reception? I'm actually not sure what the tradition behind the garter toss even was to begin with!

We are planning on doing a toss. If we weren't I would skip it. I don't find anything particularly sexy or special about them and I'm pretty sure FH and I will be exhausted and tipsy by the time we get to the hotel after the after party. If you plan on keeping it for sentimental reasons then go for it. I know we would end up throwing it away after the wedding. I'm trying not to have too many keepsakes. They just take up space.

@ C.C. My sister saw one - about 15 years ago. Her boyfriend was an usher, in his brother's wedding. She said the saddest thing occurred....

The woman who caught the bouquet was "amply built." When it came the time for guys to go for the garter, they didn't want to participate. They may have taken a few steps backward, but anyhow the ring bearer (maybe 8?) caught it. He thought it was great; a lot of people were laughing. Then they made the boy put the garter on the woman's lower leg, for a photo op. Like how inappropriate can you get? I don't know if they forced him to dance with her, as I've heard has been done. I can see why it's dying out ....

I didn't wear a garter, and my husband didn't even notice. I figured it was just one more detail to juggle.

We are not doing a garter toss, we would feel awkward as well, but I plan on wearing one.

The bouquet and garter toss is still quite popular in South Africa, but maybe because we don't make the people who catch them do anything together ... I can see how that would be awkward af.

You normally get them as a pack of 2: one to throw (plain) and one to keep (more fancy). I only had one though since I made it myself.

We aren't tossing anything at our reception. I also won't be wearing a garter, had not considered it though... something to think about.

Just FYI there is not actual function for a garter. I have a good friend who has worked in many lingerie shops and it is literally just a piece of fabric to decorate your leg. That no one will see. It's just a thing you wear so your FH can take it off and fling at some dudes.
