No trial?

Cee Cee, on April 21, 2018 at 8:21 AM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 32

Hello, Beautiful Brides and Grooms...

I'm planning a DW/elopement from 1200 miles away and had to choose someone to do my hair and makeup based solely on the recommendations of our officiant/coordinator and online galleries/reviews. I found one with great reviews who had availability and honestly snatched them up for those reasons alone.

However, I'm not arriving in Key West (our destination) until two days before the wedding and have SO much to do that I won't have time (or frankly, money) for a trial session. Has anyone else booked a HMUA from afar and not had a trial with him/her? How did it turn out?

I'm just a little nervous, but hoping all the reviews (especially the 222 here on WW) are accurate.

TIA for sharing your experience!

I got my hair done for my friends wedding in California (Im from MI) based off reviews. I know I wasn't the bride but I was nervous lol. It turned out very pretty. It was an updo with curls. She did a great job on all 10 of us. Took about 3 hours

I would feel nervous but just make sure you communicate your wants clearly and you should be good to go.

I wouldn't worry about it. I have friends who have gotten MUAs without a trial and it was just fine. And bridesmaids rarely get hair trials and end up loving it, so I don't see it being any different as the bride. I suggest just scheduling a bit more time than you normally would for your hair so you can work with her to fix it as needed until you get the look you want.

Hey there! When is your wedding date? Who’s your MUA? I’m also getting married in Key West, in 14 days!!!!!
I hired casal salon and so far they have been very responsive and their reviews are really good.
I entretained the idea of having a “trial” home to see if I would like up do or hair down but I ditched the idea and I’ll decide the day of.

Wow. Ten girls in three hours? That's quick! Glad it turned out well! Smiley smile

I see you're getting married in August, too! When's your date? Mine's the 8th. We may be date twins! Best wishes!

I'm hoping as we get closer to the date we'll start exchanges emails and such. Planning to send her some inspo pics, for which I'm searching now. I know I don't want anything elaborate, and honestly I don't do much on either front on a day to day basis, so anything will probably be an improvement. Smiley winking

That's a great suggestion! Thanks! She's coming to my hotel room to prep for an evening wedding, and we're just walking across the street to the beach. It should be pretty low pressure timewise, so scheduling a little extra time should be doable, at least on my end. I'll ask her about it!

Congrats!!! We're getting married on August 8th on Smathers Beach, at sunset. I'm using Key West Hair and Makeup for my HMU. They have a 5.0 stars rating over 222 reviews, so must be doing something right! Smiley winking And I like that so many reviews talked about how much fun their artist was and how relaxed she made them feel. That's important!

I was thinking of having someone here do a "trial", too, and bringing pics, but I don't know. I'm with you. I think I'll just shop for inspo pics, then kind of let my HMUA decide what would be best with my dress, headpiece, and boho beach vibe ceremony.

Best wishes on your quickly approaching wedding! Post pics, please!! Smiley laugh

I was having a local wedding but ran out of time for trials! I met with my HMUA for the first time on Thursday, showed her some pictures of what I wanted, and then she did my hair and make up on Saturday morning and it all turned out perfectly.

That's so encouraging. Thanks! Maybe I can stop by her shop the day after we arrive and at least meet her and chat a bit. She can then check out my complexion (and ALL my flaws) and hair texture and such so will have some familiarity about what she'll be working with.

    Thanks for sharing!

That’s great! I’m too getting married at Smathers Beach and our reception will be at the Sheraton Suites (across the street) -
reviews are important and so is customer service. I follow my vendors on Facebook too, is another tool to make sure people are satisfied. I’m not sure how accurate they are in WW since I had a major problem with the DJ I hired, he has great rates here but he’s been banned or removed from vendor’s lists of several venues in KW. So just do your homework and check with your venue if they approve of your vendors too Smiley smile I think it’s not something that happens often but it’s better safe than sorry.

LOL. We're doing our elopement through Sheraton Suites as well!! Smiley smile We were going to do their "Champagne Package" with the reception included, but it was kind of overkill for the 10-12 guests we are expecting (basically our WP and their spouses). So we got their elopement package ("Tropical Breeze"?) and are taking everyone out to a restaurant for our reception. Haven't decided on where to go for that yet, so any suggestions are welcome!

Key West Hair and Makeup was on the Sheraton's preferred vendor list, as well as Aaron's Key West Wedding's (our officiant/ceremony coordinator, hired by the Sheraton). They've gotten rave reviews on Facebook, too, so I think I'm probably in good hands... Smiley winking

I was torn about doing a trial or not (and whether or not I needed both hair and makeup). We'll be arriving on Thursday for our Monday wedding so I did set up a trial for Saturday. That said, I talked to my stylist at home who has done by hair and makeup for several weddings as a bridesmaid and photo shoots. She said I honestly shouldn't worry about it if I didn't have the time. If they have great reviews and the communication is going well everything should be just fine. I do agree with PP though that you should schedule some extra time just in case. Good luck!

Haha thats funny! We are doing the champagne package too.. but we have 31 adults (including ourselves) and 6 children. The Rooftop Cafe was our original place to host dinner, they have very reasonable prices and great customer service. I heard the food is really good too! We might stop by during our stay this time. Check them out!

Our ceremony coordinator is Say Yes in Key West, also real great people. We don't need their officiant as my FBIL is the one who'll marry us (he's been marrying the whole family so became a "thing" Smiley smile )

I will write reviews once everything is over.

I am having a destination wedding in NC (in 25 days!) and am also not doing a trial. I’d have to do it the day before and there are too many other things to worry about. Here’s hoping that both of us have good experiences!

Thank you so much! Your stylist should know. I'll trust her opinion. Thanks for sharing it! And yeah...I will see about scheduling enough time to get it as perfect as we can. But, to be honest, I think I'll be thrilled with anything that makes me look a little less worn out. Smiley winking

Oh my gosh, that is too funny. My sister is actually going to be our officiant, even though Aaron was assigned to us. But he is serving as the coordinator for the ceremony (since that's really all our package is). He hooked us up with a photographer and is handling the flowers and such. He is also going to case out Smathers and pick a spot for us. I guess it's pretty much first come, first served?

I really wanted to have a reception in the Courtyard at the Sheraton, and even had a menu picked out for hors d'oeuvres. But then my daughter pointed out how silly it would look to have ten of us standing around in that space. It would be like one person per table. That's when we decided to go with the elopement package instead and just take everyone to dinner for the reception. We're even going to cut a key lime pie instead of wedding cake. Smiley winking I will definitely check out the Rooftop Cafe! Thanks for the tip!

Can't wait to see the reviews, and the pics! Enjoy!!

Yes, exactly. There is so much to do with just wedding stuff AND we're trying to fit in a mini family vacation while we're at it. We've been promising his kids that we'd take them to Key West for years - it's one of the reasons why we chose it for our elopement. So of the two full days we'll have before the wedding, we'll have to spend at least one of them "vacationing" with the kids. I cannot imagine how I could possibly fit in a couple of hours in a stylist's chair!

And yes - I second that hope!! Congratulations and enjoy!! I'll be watching for BAM pics!! Smiley smile
