No Ubers, Lyft, unreliable taxis

Jennifer, on October 30, 2021 at 9:51 AM Posted in Planning 0 18
We are getting married in a small town where Ubers and Lyfts don’t exist. There is a taxi number, but it’s not very reliable. Our reception venue does have a lot of ample parking and maybe most people will end up staying at the reception venue (it’s an old hotel). I am a bit concerned about our guests who are staying elsewhere, who may be forced to drive intoxicated after the reception. A lot of the other accommodations are technically walking distance, but we all know the poor choices we can end up making while intoxicated. I just feel as though people are more likely to get home safely if I provided my own car hire services like maybe starting from after the cake cutting until an hour after the reception or something. Any other options or ideas?

My parents did this for my brother’s wedding and said the peace of mind it gave them was well worth the money

My friend is getting married in a similar situation. They’ll have a shuttle to bring guests to the main downtown which is within 3 blocks of all recommended hotels. They’re running the shuttle every hour after dinner.

Do you know what kind of company they went through? I feel as though a Limo company would be more expensive, but maybe that is my only option. Just wondering if there's a particular company that does that. But, I agree. I would rather cut out the wedding party limo and provide guest transportation to take them safely back to their hotels, if needed.

I’d assume it’s a van/bus rather than limo. Look into transportation companies in the area.

They did an SUV limo service because that was really the only thing available in that area.

Let guests know this information that way people are aware they should stay at the hotel/venue or at least one of the hotels in walking distance. Win win for guests and you. That way there’s a full disclaimer that Ubers and Lyfts don’t exist near your venue, which encourages people to stay at the venue or somewhere walkable. That way you don’t have to hire a transportation service since the drinkers should know where to stay.

Also ask your venue for suggestions! They may have transportation companies that they have worked with before if you still want a transportation service.

Are you going to offer this as an option for people to *go* to the wedding? If not, it may not be used as much as you'd like, because people probably won't want to leave their cars at the venue (hotel or not). I think most people who drive to an event know better than to overimbibe, so they can drive home safely.

That’s a good idea! I’ll add it in the transportation and FAQ on my website.

No. It would just be to leave the reception. The hotel does allow people to leave cars overnight at the hotel. I did ask them about that. I know that wouldn’t be someone’s plan, but you never know if they drink too much. I’ve done that before lol. I had to sleep in my car. I’m just keeping my crowd in mind.

Well, to be fair, if it comes to that, they’ll probably just fork the money to just stay at the hotel for the night.

If guests can't leave their cars at the hotel, then having a service *just* to run them back to where their staying is probably a waste - because then what do they do with their cars. I would just note on your website that some places are within walking distance and that the venue has rooms - but mention that they can't leave their cars as well, so that they're prepared/know not to drink too much/walk *to* the wedding, so they can walk back/etc.

I think I said they are allowed to leave their cars overnight. Did I type the wrong thing?

    Sorry, I read it wrong.

In that case, I would ask your guests if that would be something they would take advantage of before spending money.

I would just offer RT shuttle service to and from your wedding from your room block hotels so there’s no concern about leaving cars. Google “wedding shuttle service <insert venue town>“ to find providers.

My venue is actually at a hotel, but they don’t allow hotel room blocks so I won’t be providing hotel room blocks. The closest hotel room blocks is about an hour away from my venue when I tried to go through those hotel room block services and that just doesn’t make sense.

Gotcha! Either way, I’d schedule RT transportation from the hotels you recommend people stay at on your website. I’d either do that or plan on people being responsible with their drinking and driving and get themselves back to their hotels on their own rather than just doing one way and leaving them scramble to get their cars in the morning.

I was in a wedding where my friend was on a property with extremely limited parking and it was also a solid 30 minutes from the hotels and houses we were staying at. She found a company to rent school buses through and it went over really well. I dont think she spent a ton of money either and it provided a lot more space than more expensive luxury buses.
