Non-diamond engagement rings? O.o

PattyCakes, on September 30, 2013 at 11:53 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 85

I can't help but LOVE this ring, but I'm afraid everyone is going to be a little judgmental and think my (nearly) fiance is just cheap. We haven't gotten a ring yet, although we're planning our wedding and consider ourselves sudo-engaged Smiley xd. He wants to be able to plan something big and "surprise" me, and I know he's been saving for a while.

My thing is, I feel like we'd be getting a traditional ring mainly to please tradition. *sigh

Anyways, any of you guys have non-traditional rings? Any gemstones?

What do you think of my dream ring? (pssssst, only $220!!) Morganite just feels so... me. Smiley smile

It's whatever you want to wear for the rest of your life. no one should criticize you, they have no right. i have a diamond ring, but that's what i like. i have however considered gemstones. i think i may add a band in the future with gemstones =] but, i think anyone that has a ring out of the ordinary isn't afraid to show their uniqueness.

I got a band style ring with 3 diamonds with loops around them. I love it, He paid cash for it and I am not into jewelry all that much. It is awesome for me not to have a big rock on my finger since I am a nurse and it would tear gloves up. Get whatever makes you happy

I just kind of left this one open on the computer with the mouse hovering over the $220 price tag. Guess I'm not that subtle... Bahahahaha!

Pearls are so lovely and vintage feeling <3

Just remember that morganite is a very soft stone that scratches easily, so if you're hard on your hands like me, it might need some shining up down the road which is why it isn't hugely popular in engagement rings

You are the one who has to wear it all the time so why worry about what others think. Me and my fiance don't have a ton of money so he bought me a $45 CZ sterling silver ring from Walmart and I love it. It looks very similar to the picture you have above only it's a clear CZ stone and sterling silver.

I have a super light amethyst that appears to be a pale pink in doors. It is square cut with a diamond halo around it. I am in love with the look of my ring and have gotten a lot of compliments on it. People thing it is really unique. I also loved the price tag at $260. And the best part is no one could ever tell. Plus, down the road there is always room to pop a diamond into whatever setting you buy now.

I agree with KristenMichelle that Morganites, while gorgeous and totally my favorite stone too, might be too soft for daily ware for the long haul. But gosh are they pretty! Good luck with your decision and do what makes you happy. If this is “the ring” and you know it in your heart, go for it!

You absolutely should NOT go traditional just to appease people! My fiance reminds me constantly that I've been dreaming of wearing a navy blue dress at my wedding, and I shouldn't give in just because it's not "how it's done."

Here's my engagement ring: not just a non-traditional stone (sapphire), but a non-traditional setting (bezel). I give you 1000 points for the filigree in your dream ring! Go for it!!!

Morganite is an 8 out 10 on the hardness scale, so I'm not so worried about scratching. I've heard that they are a little brittle and can break (which is the usual problem). I've heard that a cool setting could keep them safe though...

    Hmmmmmmmmm

I guess since it's only $220, I wouldn't be devastated over a scratch down the road. We could always upgrade to another ring at a later anniversary.

Ummm...I def. didn't want a traditional ring my FH hooked me up with an awesome emerald. I couldn't be happier. Some people do make comments though, usually the people that know me say things like "that is perfect for you", the people who don't know me call him "cheap", I guess it is a good thing that I have a strong personality. I just let them know that I didn't want a diamond because I find them cliche and over rated.

Mine wasn't cheap, and it's nontraditional.

But let people talk. Diamond engagement rings aren't even an old tradition. They didn't become popular until DeBeers formed a company and got really good at advertising and telling consumers that women had to have diamonds on their engagement.

Honestly? Diamonds aren't even that traditional. Their prevalence today is all due to good marketing over the past 75-100 years, because really, diamond importers weren't earning enough. Diamonds were seen as "common," and even "cheap." Even today, the mark-up on diamonds is absolutely unreal. It's part of the marketing scheme.

I always knew I wanted a rarer and more unique stone than a diamond, and I ended up with a crazy-big emerald instead. Worth more in the long run, more my style, AND bigger than what he'd have gotten for the same price, if he'd bought a diamond instead (although, like Erica, mine did NOT come cheap, either, but ya know).

I had to straight up tell him what I wanted. I did get a diamond, but a black diamond. I love her.
