Non-diamond engagement rings? O.o

I can't help but LOVE this ring, but I'm afraid everyone is going to be a little judgmental and think my (nearly) fiance is just cheap. We haven't gotten a ring yet, although we're planning our wedding and consider ourselves sudo-engaged . He wants to be able to plan something big and "surprise"...

We haven't gotten a ring yet, although we're planning our wedding and consider ourselves sudo-engaged Smiley xd. He wants to be able to plan something big and "surprise" me, and I know he's been saving for a while.

My thing is, I feel like we'd be getting a traditional ring mainly to please tradition. *sigh

Anyways, any of you guys have non-traditional rings? Any gemstones?

What do you think of my dream ring? (pssssst, only $220!!) Morganite just feels so... me. Smiley smile

I have a blue diamond center stone.. sometimes people didn't realize it was an engagement ring, or ask me if it's a sapphire. I've also gotten comments on how small it is (mostly from my family, unfortunately), but I love it and love how it looks with my wedding band (and I've been wearing it for close to 3 years now). The one thing I can think of with the ring you like is that you'll probably need to get a curved/notched wedding band to fit around it, so you might want to factor the cost difference between that and a traditional wedding band in.

My original e-ring was a family ring. it was an anniversary ring from one of my great (x4) Aunt's. it has 3 small diamonds, recess set in a flat setting with 8 small blue sapphires around the diamonds.

I believe whatever ring speaks to you, that you want to wear from your intended, is the perfect ring. Remember, it is about you and FH, not what everyone else will think about it. If you see people look funny at it, just beam a smile at them and say, It is exactly what I wanted!! Most people will have a hard time critiquing the soon-to-be-bride on her ring choice Smiley smile

    Good luck with your planning

ETA: I think the ring you want is very pretty! The price tag should have nothing to do with the sentiment behind it.

My mom freaked out when I told her I didn't want a diamond. She accused my engagement as not being real without one. She even asked if he needed a loan. Christ almighty. He could have given me a gorgeous shiny diamond, but that's not me. I wanted something different and PINK!!! I love her. She is my....precious!!!!

Get what you want! If people are judging you on your ring...their loss.

If the ring feels like you...GO FOR IT!

My ring is actually an heirloom diamond from my grandmother. FH had it reset for me. The new setting is much more my style and I love it but I really appreciate the sentimentality that's attached to it.

I love my ring, I also did not care for a "diamond" ring. My fiance and I picked this out together. His favorite color is blue. It is very fitting for us! Like everyone else is saying, do what YOU want! My best friend reminds me that everyday!

Absolutely beautiful ring! Just ask for exactly what you want.

And researching morganite, it is not that bad of a stone. Not as strong as a diamond, but it doesn't seem like it would crumble at the first bump, its actually described as having a very good hardness.

According to this and other websites, Morganite is a very durable stone.

Thank you Liz. I keep getting conflicting information on that.

From what I've gathered, morganites can break or chip, but it's not all that common and making sure that it is well set can keep it safe. It's a 7.5 - 8.0 on the hardness scale, so stronger than steel. But they've been known to be a little brittle.

I've searched high and low for an account of someone whose morganite engagement ring actually chipped, scratched, etc... but I haven't found anything. Only people saying that it's possible.

I'm a careful person though, so I'm not overly concerned about that. If I start to worry about daily wear down the road, I could always get a different ring to wear and save my special ring for occasions. Smiley smile

I've had mine for 6 months now and am not a gentle person with it. I've smacked it really hard a few times and not so much as a scratch. If you are concerned with it, most jewelry shops offer insurance to cover stuff like that.

Read up on the history of diamond e-rings. They weren't "traditional" until the 1930s and it was a DeBeers ad campaign. DeBeers did product placement in a bunch of movies to make sure that whenever someone got engaged, it was with a diamond. Essentially they used movie engagements to sell the idea that diamonds were traditional, and we all bought it, hook, line, and sinker.

Be sure to get a durable ring if you want to wear it every day. Pearl is a bad idea--my mom tried a pearl engagement ring and they're just not meant for daily wear. But any hard, durable stone you both love is fine.

Wow everyone has such gorgeous rings! And it goes to show there is no "correct" engagement ring! Get what you want! I had a diamond the first time around, this time I wanted Moissanite and I think my FH hit the nail on the head with my ring! I stare at it all the time! Like someone else said it's a ring you're hopefully going to wear for the rest of your life! You deserve your perfect ring!

I wanted a blue sapphire SO BAD!! But the kate middleton got one and I was like, EVERYONE is going to think I'm trying to fulfill some princess complex so I let it go. Also, FH gave me an heirloom diamond (it was his mom's mom's) and I was just so touched that his horrible mother let him do that that I love my diamond Smiley smile But it was not my first choice
