Non Rustic Brides

Christina, on May 7, 2015 at 10:25 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 38

Where have you guys been able to find decor and stuff for the wedding??? I feel like every website and store only has things for rustic weddings (mason jars, burlap, chalkboard, etc. ). I have nothing against any of it but it is just not our style. I still need a few items and don't know where to look anymore...

My cousin is not having a rustic wedding and she got a lot of her decor at Ikea. It's really pretty and inexpensive,

Yeah it's really great I would have never thought to go there for wedding decor but they have lanterns, candles, candle holders, picture frames, flowers, ect! Her centerpieces turned out beautiful and classy.

Edit: Lots of pretty vases too!

I would check ebay. I've already gotten some things from there. Those things aren't that rustic.

Ikea and Hobby Lobby are taking over my house. We are using lots of picture frames instead of the chalk board. Nothing wrong with it or any other rustic things but definitely doesn't go with our décor.

First look for ideas on pinterest. The rustic look has been popular for a while but is actually not trending any more in the higher wedding design world. After Great Gatsby came out, a more polished glam look started trending. I know with everything being rustic for so long it's hard to imagine what weddings were like before. Just keep looking though, there is a lot of non-rustic inspiration out there. Non rustic trends I have seen in the past couple of years: sequins, gold accents, different styles of glass vases (not mason jars) etc. I didn't want the rustic look so I specifically avoided chalk boards, mason jars, burlap, twine, wood slabs etc. It really depends on where you are getting married too. If you are getting married in a barn, or in a very outdoorsy setting, rustic really looks great. Church, ballroom, reception hall, I'd go with a more classic polished style. Oh and Martha Stewart's weddings is always a good inspiration for tasteful wedding decor. You can often get an idea then look for supplies at Michael's or Craigslist, or by thrifting to reproduce it.

I got our card box from Ebay (never even used for $20, originally $120), and I've been going crazy over Etsy. I wish I discovered Etsy earlier in life haha!

@Brit12: I'm looking for general decor, signs, table numbers and/or holders.

I just kind of feel discouraged because Pinterest has either super rustic or super over the top glam.

Okay so Pinterest isn't always the best because the same images get pinned over and over. You can put in wedding and see images that are six years old. I would start with your colors, what color combinations do you like? If you are using a florist tell them the type of look you want and your colors and then they will come up with something for you that's not rustic. Then start thinking in these terms, think of the opposite of the rustic details you are seeing. Example: burlap runners: organza or brocade fabric runners. Chalkboards: signs with a fancier font in a gold or nice white frame. Wildflowers and sunflowers: roses and hydrangeas. Mason jars: any glass container that was meant to hold flowers. Twine tied around things: ribbon tied around things. A final note: think lace, silks, gold, glitter, velvet ribbons, pearls, crystals (if that's your thing), Hollywood glam. There are so many ways to decorate that aren't rustic. I believe the rustic look came out during the recession because it was refreshing after weddings always being so formal and people were worried about money. Check out some Martha Stewart wedding books from the early 2000s and you will see a very clean, elegant and classic wedding look.

I'm a bumpkin, so a lot of my stuff is borrowed from family and friends. Fh's grandmA has a ton of glassware, using them as candle holders, Chargers as part of centerpieces, indoor terrarium greenhouse as card box, I've been looking at things and thinking "could this have a place at the wedding? Don't only think of traditional uses of things

This website has some pretty great stuff for cheap: http://ruffledblog.com/recycle-your-wedding/?offset=96&results=12

You could also look into wedding rental companies that have decor.

I got most of my "stuff" from Hobby Lobby, Michael's Crafts, and Target. I have a woodland theme with greens, browns, and metallic - not rustic at all.

Thanks ladies! Our colors are black and white and anytime I'm in the store and see something black and white, I get so excited until I realize its chalkboard...bleh.

You have no idea how hard it was to find a black and white invitation that wasn't chalkboard.
