Nonbinary person - what do i call myself?

Jay&Emma, on December 27, 2018 at 7:43 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 11

I identify as nonbinary, but I'm not sure what words to use outside of Bride. I don't identify as a Groom. My partner is also a Bride. But I'm struggling with the fact that there are only binary words to describe the people actually getting married. Has anyone out there come up with other words to use?

I don't know gender neutral for bride or groom. Bridegroom sounds like it could be but I'm pretty sure it means groom.
Here are a few words you can use though that are similar.
    Betrothed
    Newly Wed
    Intended
    Future spouse

I'm definitely voting for "broom," the perfect mixture of bride and groom. Kidding...kind of.

Queer weddings in general can be difficult to plan because of the huge social standards for these types of events. Go with whatever makes you and your future wife comfortable. Is there a certain place that you're looking to put your "title?" Different words might fit better in different situations. "Betrothed" is gender neutral and has a romantic and classic feel to it. Mx. instead of Mr. or Mrs.

Please let us know what you decide to go with, I'm really curious about this!

I saw somewhere the term "nearlywed" and thought that was cute! And there's always spouse-to-be that's pretty straight forward.

I like the idea of spouse and spouse. Or partner ? That’s very gender neutral

Our language is very limiting that way. I had to work with my dad to find language for her. We settled on "parent of the bride" but that still feels oddly formal and stuffy for my tastes. At least we're not as bad as other languages where even items have gendered language!

In your case, I would suggest using 'affianced/intended/betrothed' then 'spouse' after the wedding.

Hi EJTumblewed! Welcome to WeddingWire and congrats on your engagement!

Makes perfect sense and that's very true, language can be very limiting this way unfortunately. You received some great ideas here in this thread for some gender-neutral options: Betrothed, newly wed, nearly wed, intended, future spouse, partner, spouse, and spouse-to-be. Are any of these sort of what you had in mind? Smiley heart

I think you should do whatever you feel comfortable with! If you want to be a bride, definitely go for it! There’s nothing wrong with having 2 brides! You could also do something totally quirky and completely unique to the 2 of you as a couple (but it would probably make the most sense if both of you used something unique). Like idk if there is a movie or something you both love, you could do something from that. Or a food. Honestly I don’t think it even has to make sense. It could just be totally fun and silly. If the 2 of you are into that. Or you could just skip titles all together and just use your names
