Nontraditional Wedding Registry Options

Katie, on October 27, 2018 at 10:36 AM Posted in Registry 0 8

My fiancé is in the army and is stationed in Alaska. I'm planning on moving out there with him after we're married in June, but we don't know what to do for our registry. My bridal shower is in December because I also live out of state and around the holidays was the best time to have it so more people are able to attend. When I move out there we are planning to get a house or apartment, so we will need all of the things typically on a registry. Right now he's living in the barracks on base though and doesn't have a place to store things if people send us gifts. Also, if people bring things to the shower/wedding, paying to ship items to Alaska is extremely expensive and often not worth the cost of shipping the item. Amazon offers free standard shipping to Alaska, so we were thinking of asking for Amazon gift cards that we could use after we get a house/apartment, but I also like to idea of having a registry where people could give money online. Has anyone ever used something like this?

My registry is on Zola and you can choose to have cash only. I was going to do that originally but then I was thinking it would be nice to have new sheets, towels, plates and ppl can ship directly to our out of state address. We live together but our stuff is getting worn out. But I think you have a legit reason to have a cash only registry!

Thank you for the suggestion! I hadn't heard of Zola before, but I was just looking at it and it seems like a really good option for cash gifts! I like that people can choose what they would like to contribute to to make it a little more personal.

I like that too. I’ve heard ppl complain about the 2.5% fee (for every $100 Zola gets $2.50). But really you’re not going to get a better deal on a money transfer except maybe Venmo but I haven’t seen any Venmo registries.

I agree with Peggy. We love Zola!! We did choose to pay the 2.5% fee for our guests when they begin shopping. It was just something we wanted to do. Best wishes!!

Im using blueprint registry. After your marriage date you have no fees to wire the money to a bank account. My sil used it for hers and ut went wonderfully. You can also merge all registries into it.

You might look into Wayfair. You can "register" for furniture but if it's funded, you can choose either to actually ship that item or take the credit and put it to another item. Seems like it could be better for the move to Alaska?

That's a good idea! I just wasn't sure with things like that since my shower is so much earlier than the wedding and we don't have a place to ship things at the moment.

I think you can hold the credit until whenever you want to ship!
