Normal length of engagement?

6-22-19 Mrs.williams, on January 11, 2018 at 1:54 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 47
Fh and I have been together for almost 15 years and we got engaged last may. When we told people when our date was they would say "why such a far away date"?? It's a 2 year engagement and I thought that was pretty normal. Weddings are super expensive even when you cheap out on things. How long is/was your engagement?

Ours will be 2 years and 3 months long. I always got asked the first year of our engagement when the wedding was and I would just tell them some time in 2018 because honestly we hadn't even started planning until right around the 1 year of engagement mark!

Ours will be just over a year by the time we're married. We booked the venue in February of 2017 and are getting married April 2018.

Our engagement will be 10 months. We wanted to go ahead and get married and buy a house. I either wanted to elope or have a very intimate ceremony so we don't really have to save up for much. FH has a friend that just got engaged last week and they're planning on getting married April of this year (3 months) and they think that's too long. I think it depends from person to person.

I always thought about 2 years was standard. A lot of people I know are engaged for at least 1.5 years before the big day. So when we got engaged and told people our date (total engagement 1 year and 8 months) people also thought that was far away. I think saying 2019 in 2017 was what got them. Even now, we are a year away and people still think that's a long time. Oh well, I can't plan the wedding I want in 6 mos.

Ours will be just over a year when we get married. We have been together 7 years (8 when we get married) and he proposed in July of last year and we are getting married September of this year!

I think that’s very normal and common! Ours is only a year, but I also think that’s on the shorter side than normal.

Our engagement term is 19 months...I would have preferred longer! But we didn't want to get married in the Winter.

Congratulations. There is no "normal" and your engagement should be as short or as long as you want or need it to be. I'm sure people are just happy for you and traditionally, engagements are around a year (give or take a few months). However, life is very different now with some people getting married older (like me), some people have kids, are in college/grad school or going back to school to change careers, etc. Our engagement was 11 months but we were together for 6 years and living together 4 1/2 of those 6 years. When we go engaged, we got "we were wondering what took so long" or "wow, finally!" but that's just the kind of stuff people say and we knew they were happy for us. Best to just answer, "That's the date we picked and we're very excited about it."

I don't think there is a normal length for engagements. It varies by each couple depending on what works best for them.

Our engagement is about 17 months, and we've been together almost 6 years. However, everyone we know who has gotten married has had under a 1 year engagement. People in our families think this is a long engagement, but I think it has been a pretty good length.

Ours is two years. We would've preferred only 1 but cannot do so because of internship commitments

I don't think there is a set "normal" engagement time. Most times I see people go with a year, but it's really dependant on your budget and savings. My FH and I were together 12 years when we got engaged, and we have a two year engagement because it worked for us, for our savings plan and FH is graduating with a new degree the same year so we wanted to wait until he was finished with his classes. If he wasn't in school, we probably would have planned for a year.

Our engagement is shy from a year long. Maybe 10-11 months long. Honestly do it when you’re ready. We want to be married today but we want a proper wedding so we are waiting longer than what we prefer. It’s all up to the both of you! No one else Smiley smile

Our engagement will be 23 months. It's been going so fast that I can't imagine having a shorter engagement. But, I guess, apart from the venue (which we booked about 16 months out) we didn't really start planning until 1 year out anyway.
