What’s the biggest reason you would choose something closer to the states vs. something further abroad? Is it cost? Is it travel time? Is it beach vs city vs elsewhere?

just curious since we were thinking of a honeymoon overseas and want to make sure we aren’t overlooking or missing the full picture.

What a trifecta of countries, Vanessa! Do you mind sharing who the cruise is through? Sounds like a trip packed with incredible culture.

That sounds reasonable depending on accommodations and activities. Any particular tricks you use/plan to use to saving up more for that trip after the wedding?

We are flying via Ethiopian Airlines; round-trip tickets from DC-Johannesburg was around $776/ticket. A safari is not cheap, especially a luxury safari which is what we are taking for our safari honeymoon. The international tickets were $1552 total; 7 day safari in Zambia and South Africa including our regional flights was ~$12K; the 4-day wine extension around the Cape of Good Hope was ~$2500; total for a trip of a lifetime, ~$16K.

We can definitely relate to the adventure honeymoon, Claire. My FW doesn't get much time off so I think we may be exploring a tourist/adventure honeymoon even though time on the beach sounds great too!

We have never done a cruise, Elle. And really we hadn't even thought about it but it sounds like a very easy/relaxing option to go with. Are there any packages you are exploring with the cruise?

That all sounds fantastic, Nikki! And you can't beat the price point with the timeshare. A great minimoon to help lead to an even more amazing anniversary! We will have to keep Cebu in mind since Bora Bora looks crazy expensive. Thanks for sharing, Nikki!

Wow, yeah that's going to be an experience of a lifetime. Did you happen to use a travel agent or did you and your FH plan it all out on your own?

FH and I originally wanted to go overseas for our honeymoon but FH got a live band for the wedding that ate up our honeymoon budget. So for us is was just cost, I would have much rather had the better honeymoon than a band, but as it is FH's wedding too and this was something important to him I had to let it go. We both love to travel and plan on taking our kids on vacations overseas so I'm telling myself this wasn't my last opportunity to really travel, and to enjoy the relaxing cruise we are going on instead.

They are SO easy! because dinner, your rooms, your pool, your theater and other entertainment are all right there on the boat! plus you get to travel while relaxing instead of driving or flying. when i was younger and we had family vacations cruising was the best because my parents could do their things while my sister and i did mine and then come back together for family dinner every night!

our cruise is stopping at 4 different countries in south america. we are going to book snorkeling and zip lining adventures! we are cruising Princess (never tried them before but ive heard good things) I've cruised Royal Caribbean in the past and they were pretty great too!

We haven’t decided on honeymoon plans yet, and originally we wanted to spend 2-3 weeks in Europe, but it looks like it might not happen. We just bought a co-op and our wedding is expensive, so we might have to stay in the states or go to the Caribbean or Mexico. We’re not beach people and my FH has never flown internationally, so going overseas to explore different cities was a big deal to us. If it can’t happen this year, we agreed that we’ll do something short and affordable now and take a big anniversary trip next year. We’d gladly visit San Francisco again! It’s one of our favorite cities and FH has suggested it as one of our alternatives.

We had to stay in the US because of the idiotic changes in visa requirements and restrictions.

We planned to tour South America and Europe and instead the the fun opportunity to cancel our plans and get no or few refunds. Smiley angry

Would love to learn more about this, Shauna. Any advice or perspective you may have on what you encountered with budgeting would be great. Would you mind if I added you as a friend and potentially continued the conversation offline? It would be great to connect over the phone or a google hangout for more color.
