Not a diamond engagement ring?

Reinne, on February 15, 2014 at 1:24 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 51

FH and I looked at wedding sets today and I fell in love with a pear shaped tanzanite ring. With a halo of diamonds around it and diamonds down the sides of the band. However FH thought it was odd to not go with the traditional diamond center stone ring.

So now I'm wondering...how many of u have something other then a diamond e- ring?

My e-ring is a diamond, but it's blue.

I would have loved a sapphire. But I do have a diamond.

Please be careful with a tanzanite. It is not an every day stone. They are not the hardest stone on the scale and it can chip/crack pretty easily.

There are a fair number of ladies on here who have non-diamond engagement rings that they love. I agree with Heather A though, make sure you research the kind of stone before committing.

    I've got a sapphire. It's the best.

I've seen a lot of non-diamond stones (in person AND among brides on WW and TK). If you're in love with a ring, don't be afraid to go with it just because it's not a diamond Smiley smile

I can't post a pic, but mie has 5 small diamonds in the center, with a blue diamond halo. It's diamond, but not clear colored Smiley smile

That said. I had a tanzanite flower ring, and a tanzanite tennis bracelet. I had the ring for 4 years, wore it every day. Never had an issue. Same with bracelet. Never scratched or anything. Mine were the light purple in color, so not as high end as you're probably talking about.

My gf has a tanzanite solitaire, with no side stones. 10 years in, it's given her less problems than her ruby ring. She works in a manufacturing plant, too. So it really depends in the quality, and your job.

I really wanted a yellow gem for my ring but FH didn't find anything he (and that he thought, me) would like, so I ended up with a diamond ring. Diamonds as the traditional stone has only been around for a while... it wasn't that long ago where most rings weren't diamonds. I say go for it and get whatever stone and ring you want.

Mine is aquamarine with diamand pave all over the setting. I love it and have never had any issue with the stone being chipped or cracked.

My e-ring is a pear shaped tanzanite stone. My FH's mom passed away a few years ago and he had the stone from her ring reset for my ring. And although I do have to agree with Heather and second that it is a much softer stone and it may show scratches (as mine does from FH's mom wearing it) it means so much to me to have this as my e-ring!

Mine is my avatar. Black diamond main stone and black diamonds and emeralds on the band. I think some people think we did it because it was cheaper, but I honestly strongly dislike diamonds. I always have. It's definitely different, but I love it.

Mine is a tanzanite, and so far no scratches, but we also made sure it was a lifetime warranty on the stone knowing it is softer than a diamond which put my mind at ease and I wear it everywhere. But I also am not getting my rings soldered together so I can take it off it need be and still wear my band.

I know I already posted in this thread and you can take this with a grain of salt, but I work for the company that named tanzanite and put it on the map and I could never in good conscious suggest it as a ring to wear as an every day right. For a few years, maybe, but for 50? Probably not.

I wanted something a little different, with most likely a sapphire, but FH picked out a ring that is diamonds. He felt that an engagement ring should be diamonds and associates them with a symbol of forever. It's special because he picked it out for a reason and maybe someday I'll get a sapphire!

We went shopping together to pick out my ring, and "no diamond!" was one of the things I was firm on. I really dislike diamonds, because of how they look, because of the ethical dilemmas behind their mining, and because the idea that they are rare and expensive was completely made up by jewelry companies.

I had been looking mostly at amethyst rings (my birthstone), but the one I fell in love with was an opal with teeny little sapphires around it. And yes, I know how supposedly opals are very fragile and can't get wet and so on - I also did research and discovered that all of those supposed facts are in fact myths and completely wrong.

Get the ring you want. If you don't want diamond, then don't get one. Nothing says you're obligated to have a diamond ring, after all.

Edit: for whatever reason it won't let me upload a picture of my ring, so here's a link to it: http://i.imgur.com/S0gqO7d.jpg

Mine is citrine, my birthstone, set in my Dad's wedding band. I love it because it's one of a kind.
