Not another rustic wedding!

Colleen, on March 30, 2016 at 9:39 AM Posted in Style and Décor 1 90

I swear 90% of pinterest and wedding ideas I find online involve burlap, mason jars, chalkboard, etc. While I like this look, it's not for me or my wedding (despite, or maybe because I grew up on a farm! haha). My wedding venue is a restaurant/banquet in a city setting on the water. Seems everything I see online is rustic/boho chic/very garden inspired or over the top "glam". I'm looking for something in between and its hard to find... I'm looking for signage, tablescapes, etc.

ETA Please don't take offense. Rustic is lovely décor but just not for me in this venue. Colors are purple, using mercury glass, my dress is ivory lace. I LOVE flowers and lots of greenery but budget may limit this so just looking for other ideas. I'm looking forward to doing more searches using the suggestions provided!

Maybe change your search words - include 'modern', 'urban', 'city wedding', etc?

I can't believe people are still doing burlap and mason jars.

I feel your pain. My wedding is not rustic in the least, but also not the sequined-type event that's been super popular lately or the blue pink color palette you see everywhere. Try being super specific on your Pinterest searches. Sometimes barely anything comes up, but you'll get a few gems! Another good thing to try is searching for photos of weddings at specific venues that are similar to yours in either Pinterest or Google. When I searched "classic formal ballroom wedding" I got less good ideas than when I searched for my venue with "formal wedding" attached.

So glad I am not the only one having that issue! My theme is Irish/Scottish. The guys are even wearing kilts. It's been a challenge finding ideas for the simpler things like escort cards and table numbers that aren't just cards. I want something that can also be used as a favor. Colleen M is right, try rewording your search, it's helped me a little.

I told my mother from day one that we would have no pallets, no burlap, no chalkboards, and no mason jars. We went to my cousin's wedding a few weeks ago and as he said "it looked like Pinterest exploded" and I couldn't help but think that nothing really stood out as "them." It was nice, but just very Pinteresty.

As far as searching, I agree, with those above-the more specific you can get, on Pinterest or otherwise, the better results you'll find.

I'm so over burlap and lace!!!! Especially when people want burlap on their wedding cake. We always wonder how many burlap hairs are gonna get eaten. Gross

Yea I agree, and I'm having a rustic/forest wedding! It's a shame there's not more variety in Pinterest. It's one thing when couples do it because it's who they are, like we grew up and met in a small, mountain town. It's another thing when couples do it because it's trendy. Try also browsing popular photographer's pages, they might have more variety!

It was very hard for me too at first, I am having a whimsical type wedding. I changed my search words to whimsical and enchanted, then the perfect things started popping up. I also used garden wedding. Smiley smile I will be making little fairy garden center pieces on some of my tables...it will be challenging but I wanted to be different Smiley smile

I told my florist I wanted fall colors. When she asked about centerpieces, I said I trusted her to just not use anything "rustic" or burlap. She smiled and said "...thank God" lol Smiley smile

It's hard because pinterest just kind of caters to what is most popular in the moment.

Does your wedding venue have a photo album of previous weddings so you can see what other people did with your same space?

I don't know if this is what you're looking for but we're DIY'ing mercury glass votives for our table decor. Our signs will either be on card stock (tent shape so they stand up by themselves) or putting each into a white frame similar to picture.

@Jennifer- I agree! I went to 3 weddings last year and saw no burlap, but we will definitely not be having that out ours. We are, however, using mason jars for the centerpieces. I decided on that before I realized it was everywhere. I haven't been using Pinterest much since I realized most of those decor ideas were too over the top or way out of our budget, though.

I agree about the rustic stuff!! But we are doing an over the top glam wedding because that is my style and i love anything that sparkles or shines Smiley smile

As far as Pinterest, don't take the pictures the pictures so literally. Use them more for inspiration as far as where things go in the reception area or to help you spark ideas that you may think of that Pinterest doesn't even have yet. I've done that with a few things so far and it's worked out well in my favor. Sometimes we have to just trust our brains LOL.

I love my burlap and mason jars and pallets. We love the "rustic" look and it shows in our decor at home and it will continue in to our barn wedding. Trying searching more specifics.

No burlap for me but I did go to a wedding with burlap recently and I thought it was pretty. I have a lace dress and my ceremony and reception will be more vintage elegant like, I guess I could say.

I use Pinterest for ideas but you gotta be careful to avoid the misinformation.

I agree with the burlap/cowboy boots/mason jar thing - WAY overdone at this point. I do like "rustic" for home décor to an extent (exposed beams, raw wood, etc.) but not for my wedding. I think there are many good ideas up here that searching should be more specific. I would use words like modern or romantic depending on the vibe your going for. Are you looking for specific ideas on table settings? colors? center pieces?
