Not attending Wedding send a gift?

Is it the norm if you don't attend a wedding to send a gift? Or is it really more common to not send a gift if you are declining?

I send a gift, at least $100, higher if it is someone I am closer with. I send a higher value gift if we attend the wedding (regardless of travel). People who invite me to their wedding are generally people I care about and because I care about them, I want to give them a gift because I am happy for them and want to contribute to their new life.

I didn't know it was a norm or not but we received three gifts this week from people who couldn't come to the wedding so I think it's more common than I thought.

An invitation, says Miss Manners, "is not an invoice." Dear Abby agrees.

I haven't recently because I had 2 friends that got married in early college and had a tiny little cheap reception and invited me basically for money but I was paying for school and didn't attend so I didn't send a gift, I still sort of feel bad, but they got married after dating for 6 months in college so to be honest I wasn't sure if it was real or not.

I think I would send one for family and close friends where I actually wanted to attend, but not if it's just someone inviting me because they're obligated or invited everyone.

I always send a gift! Sometimes I'll even gift a little more if I'm not attending, because then I'm not spending money to travel to the wedding.

Agree with @Celia. It depends on the relationship. I wouldn't send a gift just because someone I'm not really close to invited me to their wedding.
