Not being able to stand during wedding

Rachel, on May 15, 2019 at 6:40 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 11
I am chronically I'll. I have something called POTS (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome). It basically means that I can't stand for very long without passing out or falling. We are planning to get married indoors and I am planning on wearing compression stockings (They help with my blood flow)

I really really don't want to fall or pass out at my wedding. Lol. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do a sitting Ceremony or to limit the time we are standing? Any ideas would help.

Most Catholic ceremonies are seated so if yoy put chairs up there it should not be a issue...

How long do you feel comfortable standing? The last wedding I attended, the ceremony was about 8 minutes long. If you don’t want to feel like you’ve cut it short, you could sit for the entire ceremony except to say your vows.

I have a cousin whose wife has POTS. They had a really great wedding! Here’s what they did: she was sitting during the part where the officiant talks and only stood for the exchange of vows/rings/kiss. I did notice that her MOH our the bouquets in a pedestal next to her so she could help support the bride if needed. They wanted to do their own vows but because they were lengthy they did them privately before the ceremony. I would also recommend being escorted down the aisle if you are comfortable with the idea, just in case because the added emotion of a wedding can probably add to the syncope symptoms.

They also took some pictures before the ceremony (wedding party ones) with lots of seated poses, and took the rest in two phases (during cocktail hour and more during the reception)

As someone else mentioned, everyone sits for a Catholic ceremony. My ex isn't Catholic, but has other reasons he can't stand long. When he got remarried, he and his wife both sat in really nice chairs the church had during everything but the vows and kiss, after processing up. Both of them sitting photographed a bit better, I think. The chairs were set back a bit, and at a 45' angle to one another. Their attendants sat in the first row. It was no big to anybody, and their photos look great. Very regal.

I think if you were both sitting, and maybe the officiant too, then stood for the vows that would look nice! Also I’m not sure if having something to lean on would help you or not but if it would help you be able to stand for a little longer you could find some kind of decorative railing or tall table or something that you could lean on during the ceremony. I know some outdoor areas have a stage with a railing that people get married on. Hope you find something that works!

Short ceremony (however long you can stand, mines only going to be 30 mins) or both of you sit and hold hands facing eachother just like the typical ceremony ut sitting? Sorry to hear you have to handle this!

I've been to a few catholic weddings where they have a bench for the couple to sit on and the wedding party sits in the front row. I believe they just stood for their vows.

My sister has POTS!! She is much younger then me but I totaly understand what your going through due to helping her with it. Have you thought about putting decorated barstools up there and sitting durring anything but the vows and such?

That is cool! I think I am going to try and stand just for the vows. POTS is really rough sometimes.

I like how the other poster said it looked regal and maybe you can make a theme out of it! (I apologize if that comes across as in a make fun of you way, but I mean it in a very cool way!)
