Not buying the dress you thought you wanted

Christina, on June 17, 2016 at 9:30 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 59

I know a lot of people say they go into a bridal salon with a specific style in mind and they wind up coming out with something completely different. I want to know how many people went knowing the EXACT dress they wanted and did/didn't buy it. I had never looked at wedding dresses until I got engaged so I have looked and tons of wedding dresses to find a style I like. I have fallen in love with a dress out of my price range but I can't stop thinking about it. I want to try it on SOOO bad to see if it's what I want and if I could find a way to get it for less or be able to increase my budget. Any thoughts, ideas, has this happened to anyone else? What happened and what did you do about it? Did anyone actually buy it this early (I am getting married 9/30/17) and regret buying "the one"?

I bought mine already! I knew the style I wanted and the dress, but my 2nd choice won! The 1st dress was not flattering. But budget did have to flex a little by $500 Smiley sad my dress is not white, I picked ivory.

I was dead set on sleeves of some kind and refused to picture myself in strapless. Guess what kind of top I ended up with? Yup, strapless.

I knew the exact dress I wanted but when I went I tried on a variety of styles so that I could be sure that the one I wanted was the one. Every dress I tried there was something I didn't like about it so when I walked into a small shop and say the dress I knew that was it. I tried it on and loved it.

My little piece of advice is just try on different styles and tell the consultant what you like and dont like about each one. They should be able to help steer you in the right direction. I was getting a little discouraged at first and my godmother told me not to settle so i kept looking until I found it. Remember you only get one wedding dress so make sure it's what you really want.

I thought I knew exactly what I wanted, something super similar to @Mrs.P and then I tried it on and it looked horrible. I actually chose more of a ball gown and I love it!

I ended up buying the exact dress I wanted to try on. Luckily they had it and even better it was a sample. I started out trying on different styles but nothing looked as good as the dress I really wanted. Once I tried it on I knew! You can try looking at preownedwedding dresses.com they usually have lots of samples for sales as long as you know the dress name.

I thought I knew exactly what type of dress I wanted... (Heavily beaded Jenny Packham) But it didn't feel right trying them on. They were beautiful but I wasn't feeling it. I ended up buying a completely different dress with the one feature I had told my stylist to avoid (strapless)

Fast forward to now and I've faced some dress regret as I've ended up going with a much more casual wedding than I had in my head while dress shopping .

I would really recommend waiting to buy a dress until closer to your date... You will see so many beautiful inspiration pictures of people's weddings, dresses and designs and it's hard not to rethink!

I'm happy with my dress again. But I have made a rule to stop looking at other peoples dresses xD I think I'm just antsy for the wedding!

The problem with trying on a dress you can't afford is everything will pale in comparison. That's what happened to me and I ended up buying a dress that was more than I ever dreamed it would cost. My mom offered to pay, though--otherwise I would have gone with a different dress.

Some places with offer you a discount if you purchase that day. I also found that the more hesitant you are, the bigger the discount they will offer!

It's a beautiful dress and good luck in your search!

If you can't afford it, I think you need to let go. Every other dress is going to pale in comparison to that one now. I bought a very sweet 3/4 sleeve dress that I thought was exactly what I wanted. But for the past 3 weeks I haven't been able to stop obsessing over the idea of a silver sequined mini with long sleeves. It's KILLING me. I'm really glad the first dress only cost $86 lol

I knew the style and designer that I wanted, not a particular dress, but I did end up with exactly what I wanted

Bring the picture of the dress with you. Your consultant should be able to find similar dresses in your price range. Don't tease yourself by trying it on!

I love the dress that you love!!

I had an idea of what I wanted, but not a specific dress. I tried on several different styles and ended up not liking the ones I originally thought I would. I was dead set against a strapless dress and ended up with a strapless dress. My suggestion is keep an open mind because you never know what might look perfect on you & not even be on your radar yet.

My original wedding date was supposed to have been March 4, 2017. I purchased my dress on June 6, 2015. The dress I was so dead set on getting, was nowhere near the style of the dress that I purchased. I don't have dress regret at all. I love my dress. The dress I was dead set on getting was definitely out of my budget, but I would have found a way to make it work. Personally, I wouldn't recommend doing that though.

I knew I wanted a black dress. All sparkly & BLACK...

Needless to say... I wore an ivory dress, and I don't regret a minute of it. It was perfect.

It's about $1,000 out of my price range but I thought if I fell in love with it I would have time to look for sales or online somewhere, but I do think I need to get over it or get a part time job. lol. Maybe if I never see it in person I will never know how pretty it truly is?

I do love the dress that you want. However, if you try it on and fall in love with it, every other dress you try on will only pale in comparison. I encourage you to either up your budget now, if you afford it, and without breaking the bank. Or just don't try it on at all. Because if you know that you absolutely can't afford it, then it makes no sense to try it on. You don't need to put yourself through that roller coaster of emotions if you don't have to. But definitely decide on your set budget before you go, and don't let your emotions get the best of you. I am sure you will find your dress, and it may be what you least expect to like. Good luck!

I kinda had the same thing as MrsAtwood. Never thought I'd be able to wear a strapless and then yep; that's what I ended up with. Also thought I'd have something that accentuated my figure a little more than the dress I bought does. We may do some alterations to give me a little more of a butt haha. We shall see.

I thought for sure that I'd end up with a ballgown. I did not.

Don't try on a dress out of your price range, but take the photo to show the consultant what you're looking for.

I currently have two dresses, sold the first I bought because of dress regret. I'm getting married in about 2 months and have no idea which I'll wear. I don't know what to do at all! I can say your dress is so pretty! You have time and still decide
