Not needing Passport on Cruise?

Jenn, on November 7, 2017 at 4:27 PM

We are going on a cruise to the eastern Caribbean for our honeymoon and I was told today by a coworker that just went on her honeymoon that as long as I was leaving from the United States we didn't need a passport. Anyone know anything about that?

You don't NEED it, especially if you don't get off the boat. FH's family cruises every few years and none of them have passports.

I went on a carnival cruise in March and it stopped in the Bahamas. I did not need a passport, just my birth certificate and license.

Always have a passport when you leave the USA.

Went on a cruise to Bermuda in August and not everyone in our group had a passport so no you don't need it if you're departing and returning to the same port, but it's definitely easier to carry a passport than having to bring your birth certificate. I had my passport and got through security much quicker than my sister and sister-in-law who didn't have theirs.

You definitely don't need a passport but you have to have multiple forms of ID if you don't have one. For example, without a passport, you would need a drivers license (but these are becoming unacceptable forms of ID) and a birth certificate. But, if you have a passport, that's all you need. My in laws don't have passports and they go on cruises every year. They always take their licenses, birth certificates and marriage license.

We cruised this past May and neither FH nor myself have passports yet. We used Carnival. As PPs have said, if you leave from and return to the same port, you don't need one. I would recommend bringing one if possible, because as others have said, it's very hard if you run into complications and you don't have the passport. We only brought original birth certificates and Driver's Licenses. Our son only needed his original birth certificate.

I needed one on my last cruise and we left from the US. Check with the cruise line. This may vary and also depend where you are going

No you do not need a passport. I am a regular cruiser. I have one but my travel partners do not. Just as long as you are leaving and returning to the US. It also tells you that on any cruise website. You just have to carry your ID and birth certificate.

We went on a Boston to Bermuda Cruise (some of us had passports some did not) as long as they had their long form birth certificate was o.k. however like others have said if you had to fly back on a plane back into the country for some reason...you'd be screwed but they didn't need a passport to go on a cruise at least, that was our experience.

Wrong wrong wrong. You'll need a passport as long as your traveling outside the US except for maybe Puerto Rico and USVI (because they're us territories) Because you are traveling to different countries!! So get that passport! ETA many cruise lines won't let you on the boat without one. You're cruise line will tell you what documentation you need.

H and I went on a cruise for our honeymoon. Our port was in Miami and they actually scanned our passport before we even got on the ship.

We cruise frequently. You do not need one as long as you have a valid ID and your birth certificate. It must be a certified copy.
