Not needing Passport on Cruise?

Jenn, on November 7, 2017 at 4:27 PM

We are going on a cruise to the eastern Caribbean for our honeymoon and I was told today by a coworker that just went on her honeymoon that as long as I was leaving from the United States we didn't need a passport. Anyone know anything about that?

If you're starting and stopping at the same port (domestic) you do not need a passport BUT if you need to fly out from somewhere else due to an emergency, you will not be able to.

We are going on a cruise end of December and H's passport with new address hasn't come in yet so we will be bringing his birth certificate just in case.

We didn't need one on ours. We went to Nassau, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas. If you are left on an island for an emergency though it'll be near impossible to get back.

If you are going to any non- US territory, you will need your passport.

I know nothing about cruising (never been on one) but If you disembark, you definitely will.

I'm on a cruise to the Bahamas. You need a passport. You go through immigration going and returning

We've been on three cruises to the Caribbean and we didn't have to have passports. We did have to have our birth certificates. Considering its your honeymoon and you never know what may come up, I would get one just in case.

You just need a birth certificate with a raised seal and drivers license

Technically you do not need a passport for a cruise, only your birth certificate. However, god forbid you get hurt and need medical attention at one of your ports, you won't be allowed to fly back to th US. So it's best to get a passport.

    ETA: spelling

Carnival asked for either a passport or birth certificate when we went. But I would never want to find myself out of the country without a passport... so we went ahead and got them.

You do not need a passport for a cruise. I've travelled on cruises with people who've only had their birth certificate and an id. I always bring mine just in case because it's safe to have one in case you need to travel back to the US from another country.

As long as you leave from a US port and return to a US port you dont need one. I cruise yearly and dont have one. They recommend it because anything could happen and you won't be able to fly home from a foreign country without one

We just went on a cruise this past August -- if you are leaving AND returning to a US port, you do not need a passport. Although passports are strongly encouraged, you can use a certified copy of your birth certificate & ID to board.
