Not so formal wedding..

Andrea, on July 9, 2011 at 12:29 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

So our wedding is going to be outside, in the metroparks actually because it's beautiful and *extremely* affordable. We're having about 125 guests and it's going to be really casual. I'm not talking jeans and t-shirts, but more relaxed. There's a volleyball net and swings and horseshoes and whatnot, I want my guests to have fun and it be more like a big party instead of a sit down formal wedding. So the question is, has any of you been to a more casual wedding? Was it good? Did you hate it? I'm probably going to put some sort of dress code 'suggestion' on my invites so people don't show up in tuxes and ball gowns. Smiley smile I also bought a "after the ceremony" dress which I'm not sure if I'm going to wear yet because I haven't even gone dress shopping. But it's short and cute and good for running around outside having fun, where as I would worry about getting my gown dirty.

Yes, I've been to quite a few.

They were fantastic, I loved them.

FH and I are pretty low-key people and are planning to be less-formal than many of our other friends getting married in our area. I'm not planning to ask my BMs to get a specific dress, FH is wearing boat shoes, I'll be in flat sandals (our venue also has a no-high-heel policy to preserve the floors as it's a historic home).

I went to a wedding last Saturday where the Bride posted a suggestion on what type of clothing to wear on her website. If you have a wedding website and word of mouth, I don't think you need to suggest attire on your invites.

That makes sense, I haven't made a wedding website yet, I'll just have to make sure my older guests who aren't so internet savvy know, but then again they might not be out there playing volleyball and whatnot, but you never know! lol Thanks for your input, I really appreciate it Smiley smile

I was just at a wedding with "summer casual" attire suggested for the guests..It was fine, it was nice to be more relaxed, well I think guys appreciate that more lol..Just make sure people get the memo and don't feel too dressed up..i think for me the challenge was I didn't want to be more dressed up than the bridesmaids, so I was worried about that, but my rose pink maxi dress was fine:-)..the invitation I got read "please consider wearing summer casual attire"

I was just at a wedding like that a few weeks ago. it was great. they put something on the invite about it being informal dress. it was shorted than other weddings Ive been too, but it didnt feel really short or anything. no dancing or alcohol, just hanging out with friends and they also had a volleyball net set up and i think a football and some other outdoor games- i forget what.

I enjoyed it. it was very sweet and simple. they did BBQ sandwiches for lunch (started at 11)

Well I'm feeling more reassured that people are going to like it. Although the people that are coming probably know us well enough not to expect something extravagant lol we're doing an afternoon ceremony with the reception starting around 3 and ending whenever (we have the venue till 10). We're both chefs and are making all the food for the wedding so people will expect that to be a bit fancy Smiley smile All we can have alcohol wise in the metroparks is beer and wine, so that saves me a bit too on expenses Smiley smile

I really like where you are going with your wedding plans, but please make sure you are completely thorough in thinking out how your food prep and cooking is going to go. If you and FH are 100% comfortable with potentially working in the kitchen until an hour before it's time to walk down the aisle, rush through getting ready and then get hitched, I'm not going to say it's wrong. But, if you can afford to have someone cater, I highly suggest it just so you and your FH can have time to enjoy your day instead of being full-on hosts.

We're still figuring out the food but all we have to cook on is outdoor grills so I'm thinking about things I can prep ahead like skewerd things that can marinate overnight, and having someone we know, or hiring someone to cook before/during the wedding. I'm expecting the morning and set up to be a bit crazy, but that's fine with me Smiley smile I haven't actually looking into any sort of "on site" catering, but I have a feeling it's going to be a lot more money than I want to spend.

Truthfully, I don't think any guest would want to be stuck over a grill outdoors and end up smelling like BBQ, especially if there are lots of games and stuff that guests can play. Hiring catering and staff to take care of that not only eases your mind of whether or not you'll have enough food for all your guests, but it'll make sure that your food, serving, logistics of prepping and cleaning up afterward, will be taken care of without having you to worry. You should do a little research on that. It's a lot more affordable than you think, especially since the pros will be able to advise you on what would work outdoors, and what would work with your budget.

I've never been to one but it sounds like a blast!

I do agree that it might save you from stress and allow you to enjoy your day more if you're not the people doing the cooking.
