Notifying Guests of Canceled Wedding

Courtney, on March 29, 2020 at 11:41 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5

What is the best way of notifying guests that the wedding has been canceled? Letter similar to invitation? A call? Email? Text? Facebook post?

A little background:

Our wedding is 6/14/2020. Before making the decision to cancel we considered postponing the wedding. Unfortunately there weren't anymore good dates available at our venue for this year, and we didn't want to wait another year to get married.

There might be a good chance that large gatherings will be allowed again in June, but I personally don't think it would be the right thing to do asking people to come sit in an enclosed area with 150+ people when there is still so much unknown about Covid-19. I don't want my guests to feel obligated to put themselves in a potentially dangerous situation just to see me get married.

The new plan is this: go to SF City Hall with a small handful of people, get married, use the money we saved from NOT having a big wedding for a down payment on a house if the housing market crashes, and then have a laid back celebration a year or so later with EVERYONE there.

I've seen a lot of deals on Zola, Minted, etc. For "Change the Date" notices instead of "Save the Date".

I'd explain at a high level that more info to.come after your marriage and you look forward to celebrating with everyone.

We split our list on whose side it was and I emailed, texted or called my side. I also let my FMIL to tell her neighbor (which is why I wonder why the person was invited) as we didn’t have anyway other than letter to get ahold of her. We still don’t have a date so no postponed postcard.

Magnetstreet.com is offering change the date send outs. I feel like a lot of people are doing something similar. If you guys are happy with this change then go for it! Everyone will be understanding about the change. Congratulations!

I ordered custom postcards from Vistaprint that says "change of plans" and the new date, etc. I considered doing a virtual one for most and physical postcard for some, but overall it was cheaper for physical ones (which makes no sense to me Smiley xd ).

To let immediate family know about our intimate ceremony on our original date, I think I will make a card and then send a picture of it to those who are invited.
