Nursing school and wedding

Shannon, on August 5, 2021 at 8:34 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 16
Hello everyone,
I’ve been working so hard to get into nursing school for the last few years. After speaking with an advisor I learned that I am eligible to start the nursing program in January 2022! I am so excited but I am also nervous because my wedding is in May 2022 and school will be in session. My fiancé and I have already agreed that if I accept a seat in January, we would wait to go on our honeymoon when I’m finished with school. But I’m freaking out because what if I have class or clinical a few days before the wedding!?
Has anyone experienced this or something similar before? 😩

I'm not sure how many classes or clinical you can miss, but you can always speak with the professor ahead of time & see if you're able to make those classes up or how many you're allowed to miss.

First off, congrats on getting into nursing school!! That is a HUGE accomplishment! I'm sure you'll have a good idea of your clinical/class and exam schedule at the beginning of the semester. So as soon as you can check the syllabus/class calendar and if you see a conflict talk to the professor in advanced. If they are a reasonable person they should be accommodating. Good luck!

Hi Shannon! I experienced something like this. I just started a full-time job and I will only be eligible for one day off by the time of my wedding. However, I spoke with my recruiter prior to accepting the position and I was assured I would have the time off I need. Is it possible for you to speak with someone ahead of time who may know the schedule for the year to see if there are any major conflicts? Hopefully, someone will be willing to work with you! They obviously want you. Congratulations on your acceptance and best of luck!!

Hi Janae! Thank you for your congratulatory remarks. I will know more about the schedule within the next few months. I did let the advisor know that my wedding date was set and paid for already. I’m hoping that they are flexible the last few days leading up to my wedding. However, if I have my schedule ahead of time I will just schedule all of the other weddings festivities based on that. Hoping it goes smoothly considering I’m not doing a honeymoon right away. 💕

We are choosing to postpone our honeymoon as well!! I was disappointed at first, but now I am actually excited about the decision. I think it will give us something to look forward to when we are having post-wedding blues Smiley smile

Agreed! My birthday is the weekend after our wedding so we will do something small and then go on a extended honeymoon at a later time. Never imagined it this way but when do things ever go the way we plan it lol

First off, congrats!! I’m a student, work full time, and am planning a wedding too. I am graduating 10 days before our wedding. I’d say just talk to your professors. Most are understanding and will work with you as long as you aren’t missing a final. I had a teacher that allowed me to miss a class because I had a meeting with a vendor that night and still gave me attendance credit. Also, make friends with your classmates for any notes you may miss Smiley smile you got this! If you can, plan the honeymoon for a break in school, the distraction will be well deserved and welcomed!

Congratulations on your engagement and acceptance into nursing school! We're in the same boat lol. My fall semester starts at the end of this month and goes until the 17th of December. Our wedding is on the 9th and we're postponing our honeymoon to the break between spring and summer semesters. I'd speak with your clinical advisors a week or so after you begin the program and explain the situation. If you go to them day 1 with this they'll most likely write you off. Instead, give them a chance to get to know you and show how dedicated you are to the program before asking for favors. Making up clinicals can be tricky. I'll be missing 2 days of clinicals but I'm confident I'll be able to make them up along the semester. Plan as much of your wedding as you can before classes start. I did this and now I'm just coasting until our wedding (and slimming down for the gown!) So I can focus on nursing school. Take a deep breath and be kind to yourself. It's a challenging time and you need to be flexible Smiley smile I have faith in you!
