NWR: Anyone here crochet or knit?

Hollyberry, on April 26, 2016 at 1:17 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 20

I am making my mom, step mom, and FMIL blankets as part of their thank you gifts for the wedding. I learned to crochet a few years ago but have never finished a blanket (I'm one of those "stop reading a book in the middle" kind of people that people hate lol). Now I'm trying to get back into it and get inspiration! Started a blanket last night and am loving it so far. Anyone here knit or crochet? Any photos of cute projects? Just curious!

ETA: my main motivation for reteaching myself is that I want to be that aunt that makes babies in the family stuff when my siblings start getting pregnant! Lol

That's so sweet of you! I knit, and plan to learn crochet soon. I've been churning out baby blankets and lacework shawls for various friends and family for years - I knit while I watch TV, so the time doesn't feel wasted. The baby blankets I've given people are hands down my most-complimented gifts. It's really touching how many of them have ended up being the 'binkie' for my friends' little ones!

One piece of advice if you're going to start knitting baby stuff - stick to acrylic yarns like Pound of Love. They soften right up when washed, and can be thrown in the washing machine and dryer with other stuff. Parents are always SO relieved to hear that, I make a point of putting it in writing with each one!

After I finish my current baby blanket, I'm going to try some cute hats for my new niece! Attached: one of my first lacework shawls, and the inspo photos for a bolero I made for my friend to wear at her wedding, and for the hat I'm trying next.

I knit as well, never learned to crochet. I am knitting neckties for my FH and his groomsmen, knitting bracelets for all my bridesmaids, and knitting our handfasting cords. I usually knit when I'm watching TV, and when I'm stressed.

Cute! I can "knit"...and by that I mean I can do the most basic stitch in a thick yarn in a long straight rectangle pattern to make a scarf haha!

My favorite thing that I just learned though, is how to arm knit infinity scarves. I knocked out like 5 of them in the car ride to my parents house last Christmas - scarves for everyone!

I used to crochet a lot. I have thought about making gifts for my mom/grandmoms but I'm just like you and stop half way through a big project. I think I need to get the really thick yarn so the blanket can be made in this lifetime. When I use the thin yarn I get to the size of a coaster and I'm over it!

I would love to learn to knit, but right now I can only crochet. My mom started teaching me when I was little, and I picked it up again for Christmas last year to make scarves for all the ladies! Just basic infinity scarves, but they were really warm and soft. I agree on wanting to make things for nieces and nephews! I would love to make some cute blankets and stuffed toys.

@Caroline, that's what I am doing for this blanket that I am working on now, using bigger yarn. I think I am still pulling too tight, my next one I will try to make even bulkier to feel like it's not a forever long project.

Next I will learn to read patterns and do things other than one big granny square or just single or double crochets over and over again.

I wonder if knitting or crocheting is harder... I've never even tried to knit.

Hollyberry that's very sweet of you. I'm in the same camp of starting knitting projects I never finish. In grad school I used to get together with a group of ladies for a weekly "stitch and bitch" where we'd drink wine and work on our craft. I drank more wine then I ever knitted though LOL

My good friend crochets like all the time and makes everyone gorgeous blankets. It's such a cool hobby to get into. Everyone like thoughtful and homemade gifts.

I knit and I am just like you! I have a blanket that's been sitting on my circular needles for over 2 yrs now. I work on it like twice a year lol.

I knit and crochet on and off - I usually ramp up for presents at xmas, because I don't usually do a lot of knitting/crocheting during the summer.

I've made my sis (MOH) and my best friend (BM) handkerchiefs for their weddings (crochet'd the edgings, embroidered their initials on it), and so will be making one for myself for my wedding, as well as one for my mom and for my FMIL.

I highly recommend joining ravelry.com - it's a great site to use to find new patterns and inspirations. Love that site. My username is kellerina on there.

I learned to crochet when I was quite young. Taught myself to knit about 7 years ago and haven't looked back! I've had a lot of baby projects of late. Currently need to finish the last sweater for a set of triplet boys a former coworker just had! Ignore the red lines in the sleeves... It was just the waste yarn I used to hold the sleeve stitches while I finished the body. If you look closely, the cables look like owls!

I knit. My mom taught me about 5 or 6 years ago. I'm currently trying to make shawls for all the BMs. We'll see if I can get them all done in time.

@Emilyg you do beautiful work! I'm not quite that good, I prefer simpler patterns

I crochet. I am a actually working on a baby blanket for FH'S boss. I've made blankets for all of my nieces and nephews. I even have made stuffed animals. There are way too many projects to post pictures. Also, there are a couple that are NSFW.

I knit and crochet! I've made approximately a bajillion shawls, hats, sweaters, scarves, fingerless gloves, socks, etc for myself and as gifts. I used to be really good about photographing everything and making detailed project pages on ravelry, but I don't think I've updated my ravelry notebook in years.

@Holly You are so generous to knit thank you gifts! I wanted to do that but I knew it was too much for me to take on.

I'm knitting this shawl to wear at some point on my wedding day. Lace weight silk, size 2 needles and beading may have been ambitious.

I used to. Because of work and school I don't have time. I started my FMIL a throw, but it will be long time before it's finished.

I'm a knitter. I wish I knew how to crochet. My mom used to crochet amazing lace designs, but she died before she was able to teach me. I think what you're doing is a lovely idea. Smiley smile

I crochet, but I can only do super basic stitches! I made blankets for my mom and mil and sils as thank you gifts as well, but they are all packed away at the moment.
