NWR: Anyone NOT gain weight on birth control???

Jamie, on August 28, 2012 at 4:37 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 45

Hi ladies! So here's a personal question/topic. I've never used any form of BC. FH and I decided to wait until we are married to be "active", so the whole topic is uncharted territory for me. I am planning to start taking the pill after the wedding (9/29 wedding)and my OB/GYN wrote me a script for microgestin 1/20. Ive read that weight gain is one of the most common side effects for this medicine, and BC in general. Given how soon the wedding is, I'm going to wait until after the wedding to start taking it. -- don't want any surprise weight gain that will require additional alterations. And honestly, after working out 4-5 times a week to get in shape for the wedding, i'd be pretty peeved if I were suddenly 10-15 lbs heavier on the big day!

But I'm just curious -- did anyone taking the pill NOT experience weight gain? Thanks for your insight, gals! My OB/GYN said weight gain isn't a "confirmed" side effect, but I'm skeptical since I've seen so much anecdotal evidence otherwise..

    I wish haha. I had to switch to a different pill a few months ago and even gained weight with the switch. So annoying but going to stop b.c. in a few months.

    When I first started taking the pill I noticed a weight gain, but it wasn't a lot. Maybe like 5 lbs at most. As time went on I have gained weight and lost weight, but I don't think the pills have anything to do with it. I am just lazy and don't work out enough. At one point I was working out twice a day and I was on the pill and I had no trouble losing weight and staying thin. I have taken Yaz, Orthotrycyclin-low, Alesse, and now Seasonique. With Seasonique you only get a period every 3 months, so it is a pretty sweet deal. I switched to this about 3 months ago and I have not noticed any weight gain from it. I still weigh the same.

    O and I would start before your wedding because the first month can be unreliable and you should use another form of birth control for the first month

    Thank you so much for sharing your experiences, ladies! It's good to know that weight gain isn't something that occurs across the board.

    Theragirl, thanks for the great advice. I still think I'll wait to take it until after the wedding just in case I have crazy side effects. But I forgot to mention that we'll use another form of BC for the first two months, at least.

    I didn't realize that I had gained weight while on the pill but as soon as I went off of it I went from 125 pounds to 96. What a scare that was!

    I didn't get anything on NuvaRing, but I just switched to the Pill (Levasse or something) this month because the NR was costing me $100 a month and I can't afford it and also pay for the wedding and everything. I am dreading the prospect of gaining weight, but I am being proactive and exercising a LOT so hopefully I won't, haha.

    I second what Ryan said and I'm on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo which is a common one for weight gain.

    @Ryan S. That's certainly not the worst result. Certainly less expensive than getting implants, haha! Although I'm already a 32d, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that I don't go up a cup size ; )

    @Lindsay -- wow! That's quite a substantial weight loss!

    I never gained weight with it. And I've been on at least three different types in the past 10 years. But remember that side effects are just that, they don't effect everyone. I can't imagine gaining 10-15 pounds before your wedding in a month.

    I actually LOST weight. I was on Yasmin, and for whatever reason, I had a much easier time keeping weight off. I'm off of it now and the first few months were ROUGH.

    We are fine, oddly now they say it all the time on tv. Both are thin very physically active 20 and under. No family history etc. It is something to really consider before taking anything.

    Thank you for all your responses, gals!

    @MJ, so glad to hear the girls were both alright. And I think I've seen those commercials on tv. The side effects to so many drugs can be truly frightening.

    I gained some weight using Loestrin24. But I went from a B-cup to a C-cup and got some great curves, so I really am not too unhappy about it. I feel more womanly now. Smiley smile
