NWR - Attend my Master's Graduation or Not?

S.ME, on December 8, 2016 at 5:35 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 40

I can't decided if I should attend my master's degree graduation or not. I have worked by butt off doing this part time while working full time and have 2 kids... BUT I have no real interest in attending the commencement ceremony. It's long, it's in a huge crowded building which gives me anxiety... the flip side is that it's a celebration of what I've accomplished.

UGH! I don't know!!! What would you do??

I think it's really up to you. I wouldn't have missed my M.Div ceremony for the world!

You have accomplished an amazing thing; you deserve to celebrate in the exact way you want.

    Congratulations!

I understand the dilemma ! I have the same issue. But I probably will not since it is so long! However, mine is for my bachelors, masters is a huge accomplishment! Might be nice for your family and kids to see to!

I skipped my master's and doctoral commencements and I only kinda, sorta regret it. Looking back, I wish I had attended my doctoral one, but I graduated all the same. It's not something I ever think about.

I did not do my two BA's (just one of them) and I did not go to my Master's graduation and I wish that I had. I worked hard for that piece of paper and I now regret not walking across that stage. My DH graduates with his Masters in May and I am going to make him walk.

I'm glad I did. It was almost a surreal event to me. I thought to myself "I fucking did this". Something I will never forget!

So I have ALL these emotions that you are all posting! LOL

I'm 100% for it, and then 5 minutes later 100% don't want to go! Why is it so hard - it's a simple thing - Go or not! HAHA.. probably why my sister gifted me this make a decision note pad!

    - I'm leaning "go" right now as the polls I'm taking are all leaning that way and quite convincing ..

Thank you so much for the congratulations - very kind of you all!

I passed and celebrated at home. I was told when I was 18 that I should find a nice man and become a housewife, since I wouldn't be successful in college, which to me was SO offensive. I have 3 degrees that I busted my ass for, but sitting through a long ceremony had 0 appeal for me. We planned a trip shortly after I graduated and that was so much nicer imo. But everyone is different Smiley smile

I didn't, largely because I did it online and would have had to travel 10 hours by car to get there, and DF couldn't get the time off. For this second MS degree though, I absolutely intend to.

You should go. I was so happy that I actually walked across the stage to accept my Master's degree (even though I had attended the hooding ceremony already). Walking just really closes things out and makes it all feel so real.

I live in Virginia, and my master's graduation was in New Jersey. President Obama spoke..... so yeah, very disappointed I couldn't go! Maybe find out who the speaker is?

I attended mine, but almost wish I hadn't. It was at a large Uni., with a jam-packed field house; parking and moving all the people around was insane. My sister attended hers - a small group, but neither of our parents attended theirs'.

I'm trying to find out who the speaker is. That would've been awesome to see Obama speak, at your own graduation no less! I don't think our speaker will be anywhere near as well known! lol.

I'm 110% planning to go to my law school commencement in the spring. I feel like it's been a huge commitment of time, money and effort and I want that moment of recognition. DH didn't have any interest in going to his masters commencement though so we didn't do anything. There's not one right answer.

@dreamer this is one of my main reservations - I know my situation is going to be similar.

I'm feeling like on one hand yes, you should go and celebrate and own it, but on the other hand it sounds like you're a lot like me and hate the big crowds, long drawn out process etc and it sounds like it wouldn't be fun at all! as long as you don't think you'll regret it, stay home and celebrate in another way!

FH and I didn't attend ours, even though it was only an hour away. The event itself didn't appeal to us because we attended the one the year prior (it's part of our residency events). It was long and tedious because every mentor gives a speech about the student and then every student gives a speech (and despite only having 11 graduates that year, it's still 22 long speeches!). So it was a clear decision for us!
