NWR: Baby registries and crazy overpriced items!!!

Finally Mrs Gee, on May 8, 2015 at 1:12 PM Posted in Married Life 0 40

Ok so my SIL is pregnant and although I am overjoyed for her, I looked at her registry (registered at Pottery Barn and Babies R US) and about died. She registered for an $1,200 dresser for the baby among other things. Also she put on there 2 diaper bags from pottery barn that are $160 each! We decided that with our budget we couldn't afford the higher priced items per say but wanted something that would be put to good use. we decided on the stroller/ infant car seat combo and paid 1/4 of the dresser cost. Now, DH and I are not parents and don't have kids, but does the expensive stuff really matter? I feel like its a little gift grabby? I may be wrong, but is it normal to be a little put off by her astronomically high choices?

Er. Yes. A baby can sleep in a drawer if need be. Just sayin'.

I find it distasteful, especially if they clearly haven't done any research and are registering for things they think they need, instead of things they will need (diapers, nipple cleaner for bottles, etc).

When I had my kids I didn't do the registry thing. I ask for diapers, wipes, and white tee shirts in all sizes. I much rather those items than a over price diaper bag or dresser.

I've never seen a baby registry with the furniture on it...in my experience its been something that the mom/dad to be and or grandparents to be purchase it.

Plus, I think Pottery Barn is a bit much for a baby registry (And I LOVE Pottery Barn)

    I don't have a baby, but I can't fathom how a BAG could be worth $160.00. I mean.......BAG!

That seems high, but I think it has to do with where they registered. We registered at Target and had a ton of different price points (but nothing that high)

When we registered we put anything we wanted on there (baby related). If no one brought it that was okay because we wanted the completion discount. I think it was like 20% at BRU. So yes I did put her crib set, and dressers on ours, I didn't expect anyone to buy it but they did!

Right!! I mean I get that they registered at expensive places, but my thing is that that's a lot of money coming from the family- when I know, everyone can pick and choose what they want to spend. However, I think that they are a little bit crazy pants because they literally had an argument with us about $ because they said we didn't know what money issues are and we cant complain... uh, my DH gets laid off multiple times a year (union electrician) and to make ends meet has to travel across the country for work. We make it work but its hard. They have 2 well paying stable jobs and yet they spend it like crazy and then its a "woe is me" complaint!!! Also, I noted that there were a little bit of some items that I have heard bad reviews on or weren't necessary and gave her a nice heads up. she flipped. lol

@ Mrs Pope- Im definitely not trying to knock putting those items on a registry, but I think I felt a little out of place since I purchased the $300 stroller set and look at other things and in the back of my mind, I know its a generous gift, but compared to the other over prices ones, I felt like I didn't give enough.

I sort of agree with you, but my sister did this. She didn't register for furniture that was that expensive, but she did put it on there. She ended up buying the furniture herself, and they were using her Amazon registry more of like a wishlist for what she and her BF planned to buy. If she told me she was doing that I wouldn't have shared that registry with her shower guests. She put a range of price points including some expensive things on her Buy Buy Baby registry, but nothing over like 175. Some people went in on joint gifts for large things like the pack and play.

Anything from Pottery Barn will be overpriced IMO...

We put all our furniture on ours at target and BRU but I made sure it was all reasonable. 1200 dresser is not reasonable.

What's the difference between a regular dresser and a baby dresser?

Exactly! she literally told me that they aren't purchasing the furniture themselves and that its legitimately on there for people to purchase. I just found it kind of ballsy. I get the completion discounts though. I had a macys registry for that reason that I didn't share with anyone. It was just for coupons. I just think she is relly into the labels vs what you actually need.

My thinking was along the same line as MrsPope regarding the furniture and the bag, and I would probably do the same thing.

If there are things on any registry that are just too high for me, then I get a giftcard and they can put that toward the expensive gift. Or I go in on a group gift. No big deal. I'd rather people be able to get what they really want.

We are pregnant with twins. The most expensive thing on our registry is the car seats ($90 each). They need to have realistic expectations. They can spend $1,200 on a dresser if they want to, but it's highly unlikely they'll receive it as a gift.

KM- I am still trying to figure it out. If there is no difference, id get a normal dresser and then the changing topper to put on top.

LOL my DH is like NOPE no babies if this is how expensive they are. I had to explain that yes, they are expensive but they don't NEED a $1200 dresser. She's really messing up my baby making plans LOL

I don't think the entirety of our nursery furniture will cost $1200. I'm actually just setting up my registry right now. Target and Amazon FTW. Who needs overpriced stuff for a kid to (literally) shit all over??

Ya I really like the $300 stroller and infant car seat that we got them because its practical and safe, so I went ahead and got it because it will be well used (I hope).

Lol Pottery Barn and their trickery. Trying to get people to spend more because it has the word "baby" on it. I'm big on repurposing old furniture, so buying new furniture in general is crazy to me, let alone a $1200 baby dresser.
